Fogging the engine for the winter?
I was told by some friends that I should fog my engine since it's garaged for the winter. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this and what thoughts they have, especially if it works.
Thanks

Its a good idea. I fog my race car after every race (every weekend)...especially because it burns methanol. Go ahead and fog it...its just added insurance.

It's oiling down the cylinder walls to protect against corrosion from condensation. I've never done it but I think I should, and soon.

gotcha, i learned the hard way, i built a buick t-type motor with all the goodies put the motor in the car, but didnt try to start it till it was warmer outside, well when i tried the thing turned over like it had 90w oil in it on a -20 day. (wouldnt start) i pulled the motor back out and all the piston rings were rusted, so i had to start all over. not fun! so yeah if your not gonna start your car for a while, i would definitely do it!

Two Q's.
1. Call me stupid but, if oiling down the cylinder walls... I would have to pull the heads everytime? Do you guys pour it down the spark plugs holes? What do you use to clean it out with afterwards? 2. STANG_ROTY, no offense or hard feeling at all, but shouldn't your times be in the mid 11's with your combo? I mean I am running 12.20's at 111mph with my setup in my sig. Thanks

pour it in the spark plug holes, and crank the motor over.(w/no plugs in it) then you just start it up when your ready, smokes a bit but it all goes away.

Alright, one more question. I have had my car in a unheated old factory for almost a month now. The engine hasn't been started since I put the car in storage. Is it too late to fog the engine??
USMC302 - No offense taken ( I get this all the time) but you must realize that I'm using all 302 parts in order to pass emissions. I'm using unported 302 Performer heads, and an unported Performer RPM intake, and shorty headers. My goal was to make the quickest street-legal Mustang in this area, and I've done that. Plus, it looks like you have about 2-300 lbs less than me (you're a LX), and you have better heads. My MPH is down, but I think it's due to me lifting off the throttle before the final stripe at the strip. I have a ton of tuning to do as this motor only has 600 miles on it and I've only made 3 passes. So, in other words, yes you are right. I should and could go faster if I spent more money and tuned her a bit. But 12's makes me very happy for now.

Thanks, I'll be sure to do this to my coupe, it is sitting up for the winter. I need new spark plugs anyway so it gives me an excuse to change em.
Thanks for the response, yeah, staying smog legal and going fast is something that is very respectable and yes, I think you'll be on your way with more tuning, especially since you've only done the three passes. It took me 10 passes one night before I hit my best ever. Good luck, thanks for all the great info guys!

Could I skip the whole 'fogging thing' if I just went out every couple weeks or so and started her up and let it get to operating temp? That way oil would be circulating often enough to keep out condensation/rust build up...is this correct logic?
Thanks, E

the easiest way to fog an engine is spray wd-40 in the carb/throttlebody while cranking the engine over. It presents no hard starting and no smoke when you do start it.

My car has been sitting for over a month, and it's pretty cold. Is it too late to fog the engine?

Wait a minute, does all the oil in the cylinder/piston/piston rings necessarily burn away in the first place? I can see the logic of what happened to SN95Gt19, simply because the engine was never run, thus the oil not circulated, but for those that use their cars relatively often, you might think that's not an issue...

Its never too late to fog the engine. Its not going to hurt anything. All it does is lubricate everything. Im sure your motor hasnt rusted at all at this point.
beanhead - this is not necessary on a car that is driven often but is a good idea if it does a good bit of sitting. Its easy, quick, cheap insurance.
