302 engine question

Are the 302 engines from the 70's worth putting in a 92 Mustang. I have been given a 302 minus the carb and distributor...Not sure what year it came out of other than a 70's Mustang. I also scored a C4 Tranny that was mated to it then. I was thinking about putting it in a 92 that I am working on until I can get my stroker built next year...

Re: 302 engine question

70's 302s are "smog" motors in their stock form. Although an improvement over a 4 or 6 cyl, it's not MUCH of an improvement. Severly lacking in the horsepower department.

But, if it was me, and a stroker is on the horizon, I'd put it in. Free is free, and this will give you a chance to get all the engine swap bugs worked out of the car before the stroker motor arrives. ;)

Re: 302 engine question

I just wanted to make sure that it would fit without too much modification. I know some SB chevy engines have issues if you try to put an older block in a newer car. I am an old Chevy guy and not too sure about Fords completely. After I got the Stang though, I am hooked..

The engine will fit, but you will have to swap some of the front accessories, like the timing cover, water pump, etc.

Jester hit this one right on though, last summer I swapped a 70's 302 out for a 91.
