306 or 331 ???
I am a new member and just learning computers so please forgive any errors. My question is this,I am planning a rebuild on my 1992 G.T. and I am trying for around 400 reliable h.p.I have narrowed my choices to a short block from D.S.S. Can I achieve 400 h.p. with their bullit 306 or is a 331 a better choice?Any combos or suggestions will be helpful.I would like to stay naturally aspirated if possible.Anyone ever done business with D.S.S?

Making 400hp out of a 306 isn't generally a real streetable N/A combo. A really nice 331 combo should do 400hp.
A lot of guys have had great comments about DSS on the board. |
dream setup
hey, if you've got $$ to spend, consider this one:
(I've been dreaming about it myself!) lol DSS Pro-bullet shortblock Edelbrock Performer Package Cartech Single turbo system with that, you can get reliable 450 rear-wheel HP... total cost is like $1999 + $2200 + $3900 and daily-driveability w/ over 20 miles per gallon mileage when used with a steep rear-end like 3.27 or 2.73... and guaranteed low 12's high 11's.. not bad.. but, if you're like me, and this is a dream, then the 331 can hit 400 HP N/A w/ higher compression, Edelbrock Performer RPM top-end and long-tubes.. either way, its gonna be a fast car, good luck ! :) |
Go with the 331.

You want 400hp from a n/a combo it'll be easier to do with a 331, but it can still be done with a 306. A friend of mine just had a 332 built that on paper is 515hp at the flywheel. Dropped the motor in last weekend, he's just waiting for the carb.
Oh and btw, you may get 400 reliable hp out of either one, but the question becomes how reliable is the stock block? If I were gonna do it and had the cash I'd go with an R block or at least a Mexican Block. Just my .02 |
306,331 kits
Me, I built a coast high performance 347 kit, and its great, 30lbs injectors, 75mm maf, 70mm tb, trick flow upper and lower Isky cam, and pete jackson gear drive. it comes out to 338 at the rear wheels and 368 ft lbs of torque at 4200.

Go with 331 for reliability!!!The DSS package is a great deal and the customer support is also great!!! Spend a couple more dollars and get some nice heads. The 331 will be more power than you need and plus it is the perfect platform for future upgrades in power!!!Longtubes also will give you good strong feeling with this setup!!!!
