331-347-351
I am looking at doing an engine swap come winter time. I got a budget of about 3500-4000. I cant decide on which engine setup to go with. I am hoping to put about 400+ hp to the wheels. I want a natually aspirated car hopefully and it is a going to be a daily driver. I know this is a lot to ask for out of a single motor. What are ya'lls thoughts on motor setups for my swap.

daily driver? well i would love a stoker.. plenty of HP, remeber though along with ethe block comes injectors and other items that need to be purchased so do your reasearch. a good ford racing motor will get you close, with some mods. 2400 for the motor with gt-40 heads. summit racing cataloge. check it out.

Do you have any mods at all for your stock 302? I put a 351 w in my 89gt and if I had it to do all over again, I would have put a 331 in it. Only because I drive this car on the street a lot and there just ain't a whole lot of room between the fenders. Since it is your daily driver, I would suggest a 331 or 347. All of your stuff still fits and if you stay fuel injected, it will be cheaper than a fuel injected 351 based motor. For what I wanted, the 351 was cheaper to build. There is not a lot of room to change plugs or tighten the header bolts ever so often. The passenger side is not too bad, but the driver side is a PITA. Between the dipstick tube, master cylinder, clutch cable, and the steering linkage, there is no room in the back of the motor. You can easily put a 331 in your car for $3500, if you do most of the work. Just my .02 worth.

Let's not forget about "Uncle Henry" for what you're doing, I'd go with a FRPP crate motor. Factory performance with a warranty, and no hassle. New parts all around, and a new set of aluminum GT-40 heads up top. All right inside your budget. Can't beat it for the money dude.

so everyones thoughts are to scrap my engine and buy a Ford Racing 5.0 and go from there. So lets say that i go with the 347 setup. I need the short block and i want something with more potental than the GT-40 heads. What intake would ya'll recomend. remember this is going to be fuel injected and a daily driver. Also has anyone had problems with oil consumption with their 347. I hear thats a problem in many.

I like the trickflow intake, others like cobra's and also the explorers... Everyone has different opinions.. oil consumption i haven't heard of any issues myself. the ford racing block is awsome.. summit racing is good to get from.

He ordered it from Summit. It's the M6007-XB3 http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=3791
If you click on the "Parts instruction sheet" http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...0B51XE3XB3.pdf They make it pretty clear that there is no Warranty.. Tony |

IMO, I would get the GT40 intake with AFR185 heads. Depending on the cam selection, I would get either 1.6 or 1.7 roller rockers. If you plan on doing some racing (who with a mustang wouldn't?) I would get a 7 qt oil pan too. Top it all off with 24lb injectors, 70mm mass air meter, 65 or 70 mm tb, 190lph fuel pump. Then go to the dyno and have a chip burned. That would be the sh1t. Unless you decide to add some type of power adder down the road.

I would definitely do a 347, but no way on Earth you'd see me buying a crate motor. They take shortcuts to pump out the production...not exactly something you want in a reliable performance engine.
There are many better builders out there. Do some searches to find out about others' experiences. |

well i have a couple shops here within 50 miles that do good engine work, Heintz Brothers and Custom Performance. Im not sure that my stock 302 block would be worth using. It already has 104k on it. I guess I should talk to them and see what they suggest. I just wanted a little info before i went to them. I think i am stuck on getting the 347. I dont really want the clearance issues of the 351 but if i did the 331 i might want those extra cubes later on.

The rear spark plug is a pain in the azz, but the benefits of a windsor swap are more than worth it. Unless you already have a lot of parts for a 8.2 deck motor you might as well take the cubes. your going to have to get heads, cam, intake, oil pan, dist, etc. anyway. when you get bored with you 331 theres not much else to do but start raising the rpm's When you get bored with your 351 you can always make it a 428. I had a mild 351 with trick flow R heads and intake hyd. cam, stock EEC-iv (A9L) and went 11.50@117 My brother built a 331, I smoke 'em every time!
PS . The reason for the R heads on a mild 351w, was because I was planning to build the 414 I have now. |

FRRP 347 w/185 AFR's and Edelbrock Performer RPM II efi along with a nice set of 1-5/8 or 1-3/4 long tubes. would make a nice combo for a street car and your emissions stuff will hook up allowing you to use the stock computer with injectors and mass air as an upgrade.

well i think im gonna put my stroker on hold till the spring time since i cant find that jar of quarters i hid under my bed. So i think im gonna go for a head swap and maybe a new intake. Just something to put me in the 300+ catagory for now. I am looking at the afr 165 street heads and they claim to do it by themselfs. Are those heads going to be ok if i later decide to stroke it to a 347?
also which cc do i need to get the 58 60 or 61 i think. My 95 5.0 motor is bone stock right now so any uplift to it would help. any other suggestions appreciated...oh and i want to stay N/A |

If you are going to put AFR 165's on your stock motor, get the 58cc chambers. I wouldn't put them on a 347, get 185's for the 347. Or you can get the 165's now and port them out later for your 347. I know the 185's are big, but I would probably go ahead and get them and put them on the stock motor now and reuse them on the 347. If you are going to wait until spring, why not just keep what you got now and build your 347 the way you want it? Then you won't have to buy a second set of heads or have the ones you get now worked on. Chances are, you will change your mind about the 347 a hundred times between now and spring.

I'm with IEATCAMAROS on this' If you are even considering a stroker motor, go right to the 185's. The bigger heads won't hurt your little motor as much as buying another set of heads will hurt your wallet later
