To determine if it is a windsor or not is easy. First, look at where the top radiator hose enters the block. If it enter at the intake then is a Windsor. If it enters directly at the block below the intake then its a Cleveland. You can also tell by the valve covers. The top of the covers on a Windsor are flat and the Clevelands come to a point almost.
The is a code stamped on the block (I forget where) and one of the digits denotes the year it is. There is also a 351M which you don't want to build. They're junk!! ------------------ '82 GT 351W C-4,BBK headers,Carter 625 carb,Comp.Cam,Flowmaster exhaust. 1988 GT...T-5,bone stock |

I was thinking about it but I don't know yet, it depends if I can find anyone to go with me.
Did you ever find out for sure which 351 engine you have? It takes me about an hour and a half to get to Carlisle. ------------------ '82 GT 351W C-4,BBK headers,Carter 625 carb,Comp.Cam,Flowmaster exhaust. 1988 GT...T-5,bone stock |

I didn't look yet with the engine but I'm pretty sure I have a 79' 351 Windsor.

On the front of the block is a code. Write it down and call Summitt tech line and they can give you the answers. they verified for me that what I thought was a 351 was a 302.

I wouldn't admit that I couldn't tell the difference between a 351 and a 302!
I don't mean to sound ignorant but come on now!! PLEASE..PLEASE!!!.....tell us that you are unfamiliar with Ford engines....PRETTY PLEASE!!! ------------------ '82 GT 351W C-4,BBK headers,Carter 625 carb,Comp.Cam,Flowmaster exhaust. 1988 GT...T-5,bone stock |

one way to tell a 351 from a 302 at a glance is the deck height. the 302 has approximately 1/2" of space from the timing chain cover to the deck and the 351 is substancially larger like 2" or 2 1/2". I'm just guessing on the distances but it's noticable. These are on the windsor engines. good luck

On the driver's side about 3/4 of the way back the number of the year is often casted onto the block.
