351W in an 84 stang

I bought another 84, the 'kid' put different heads, (not sure of the type, 88 stang heads I think he said), headers, an edelbrock manifold, cam, and carb.. bottom end is shot (bearings I think)..

considering a 351 short block with all the parts he put on the 302..

this stuff will all work rite??

any things I should know about this swap???? ant tricks, pluses and minuses????

Input on the 351w in a mustang would be great (i can only imagine the swap makes the car awesome)..

Black,84 GT,ground effects, shorty headers, 'open' dual exh.,302 HO(no pollution control crap),T5,89 ported heads, edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 2122 cam,600 Holley, high volume oil pump...

4:10's on their way!!!!

hey windsor power you best belive that the 351 would make some serious power i had a 84 lx with windsor power you will need a intake headers 2inch cowl hood keeping in mind that the windsor is wider but will make more power if you use the right parts .

The 351 is the way to go. Mine is almost done and I can't wait. You'll need a larger hood, a different damper (302 has 50 oz balance while the 302 has 28oz), different headers, oil pan, but everything else should work. Good luck

I just read an article that sez, a new flywheel, intake, balancer, oilpan, crank pulley spacer, power sterring mount is all the parts needed??

but around 350 hp would be cool

Simply because of the displacement, yes a 351 will make conciderably more power than the stock 302. But, with those restrictive heads, it will not be that much overal (300 maybe). I think that you should do it, just don't be expecting all that power. Now when you start putting on better components (ie, heads/intake/exhaust) then the 351 will give you gobbs of power, it will MAKE you beef up the driveline, which is a good thing. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

There are a number of parts on the 351 that differ from the 302, so the swap will be a little bit more expensive, but i say worth it. You need: engine mounts (i think), flywheel, oil pan, oil pump/pickup/driveshaft, lower intake manifold, harmonic balancer, headers, and i believe that you do need a small rise in the hood (1.5 in cowl should do) because the intake sticks up higher.

The mustangworks (this site) has an article on 302/351 differences as well: http://www.mustangworks.com/articles...n/351swap.html

Yes, dinomite is right. You will also need a stronger engine mount to support the extra weight from the motor. Either convertible mounts from an 87-93 or energy Suspension(more $$) will work. You will also need a new lower manifold due to the extra width between heads. However, the upper intake manifold will still work. You will also need a harmonic damper spacer if you want to keep the serpentine (single belt) setup.

Depending on the 351W block a reverse rotation water pump has to be used in order to run a serpentine belt. Upfront costs are more expensive compared to a 302. The rewards are worth it. The biggest flaw with the 351W is breathing. AFR 195 heads work great. You should also buy a cam that is designed for low rpm torque. The trans has to be upgraded. i learned the hard way, and ended up eith a t-5 salad. Tremec tko has been able to handle the power. Relocating the battery to the back will help take some of the new added weight off the front end. A double sump oil pan is also critical. Good luck...Just remember its worth it.

Depending on what intake manifold you get, you may not have to get a different hood for clearance. I believe a Weiand Stealth, Edelbrock performer or torker manifold will work without changing the hood. Good luck!
