351w heads on 289
Has anyone used 351w heads on a 289/302 engine? I've been thinking of doing this to get more flow out of my engine. I just want to know from someone who has done this if I may reused the stock valvetrain components aside from the larger valves. Also I would like to know any problems I may encounter before they present themselves. I have read that I can use a thinner head gasket to avoid losing compression due to the larger combustion chambers. I have experienced slight detonation w/the 289 heads. Maybe I would be better off with the lower compression(?) Also, has anyone used the CompCams Extreme Energy Camshaft?

My 66 mustang has a 76 model 302. Ive put early mo 351 heads on it.Used the 7/16 head bolts that were on the 302 orginally with hardened washers under the heads of the bolts. The 351 head bolts are 1/2 and wont thread into 289/302 block.Ford Motorsport
makes a special bolt just for this for about $75 a set if you wanted to go that way. I used intake gaskets for the 351. However since the 351W block is wider the 2 pieces that go on the front and back of the intake(the small cork parts) came from a 302 intake gasket set. Everything else was a normal swap. |

I have 351 heads on my 67 mustang (which has an'89 302.) Use a 1974 or older head to get the small chambers (60.4 cc) and Large valves (1.54/1.84.)
Stepped washers are available to allow use of the 289/302 bolts, but they're not especially cheap. Cheaper than the bolts, though. '72-74 heads have induction hardened seats, so these won't be bothered by unleaded fuel. The only problem I have had is that the studs may pull out if too radical a cam is used (I had mine pinned to prevent this.) Remember, with the larger intake ports and larger valves, any cam you choose will be accentuated, so don't go too wild (I used a motorsports E303, .498 lift) You'll enjoy the increased mid and upper range hp. Even more so with a slight porting of the exhast outlets (don't go crazy, just get rid of the pollution control "bumps" and open up to gasket size.) Good luck, Sta67ng |

Edelbrock also sells head-bolt bushings for around $40. You will need different intake gaskets for the swap but they are readily available.

Regular rocker studs were usualy just pressed into place. Under extreme conditions they could be pushed out of their holes. To have them pinned is when a machine shop drills a small perpendicular hole in the stud to put a pin going through the head and stud to anchor it into place. Another option is to have the stud holes threaded so you use run screw in studs. I have a pair of ported HiPo 289 heads they ar set to flow a prety high cfm. They have double springs, screw in studs, billet roller rockers, and guide plates. The only thing I wish I had done was adding hardened seats when I had them do a five angle valve job. Too late now, maybe next time. I can't wait to run them. They are going on my 351w. Looks like finances are going to push it back another six weeks. So many dreams, so litle money.

I also have 351W heads on my 302. The heads are 72's the block is 69. I used Edelbrock stepped washers with 7/16 bolts & 351 intake gaskets. I also had the heads drilled and tapped for screw in studs and had Chevy 1.94" and 1.60" valves and hardened seats installed.

I've also been thinking about doing this. Question: Can I still use my 302 intake? Why did some of you have to use 351 intake gaskets? What exhaust headers should I use? I've seen a dual exhaust kit for my '79 in JC Whitney for cheap. Is this a good idea? Thanks

You use the '69-'70 351W intake gasket because of the larger intake ports. But you still use the 302 intake manifolds.
