393W-Which heads?
 
Okay, the 302 is dead-long story. I now have an F4TE longblock 351W with the F2TE rods. The block is at the machine shop being bored .030", line honed, new cam bearings and core plugs, and then it's getting a cleanup cut and when the pistons+crank arrive, we'll set the deck height. I'm going to go with the Scat 9000 3.85" stroker crank, the 351W rods and a dished piston (Either KB 12cc dish or SRP 14.5cc dish), the CR with a zero deck and 60cc chambers will be mid to high 10's. The assembly will be balanced with a pioneer damper and a good billet steel flywheel (won't be an Ebay cheapie). Headers will be 1 3/4" longtubes and I'll be using a Vic Jr. intake (already bought it) and a proform main bodied 800 double pumper carb. Cam will be a hydraulic roller (seeing as this is a factory roller block) and will be specd by one of the custom cam grinders (Ed Curtis or Buddy Rawls). It'll be backed up by a tremec TKO600 tranny and a built 8.8.
My goals for the car include:

1. runs on pump gas
2. fairly streetable ie-power brakes(hence the hydraulic roller)
3. Makes peak power before 6000 rpms (cast crank)
4. 120+ mph in the quarter with a 3200lb car (includes me @245 lbs).
5. No worries about emmissions-as long as it doesn't kill trees when I drive by them ;)
I've excluded the AFR 205's due to the fact that they aren't readily available with hydraulic roller springs and their "bare" heads are really bare and would cost more to set up for hydraulic roller springs than complete solid roller spring heads and that's without the CNC work.

I say CANFIELD, but I'm dying to see how John Kaase's new heads do, so my official vote is for Jeg's/Kaase.

They're already outlawed in EVERYTHING, but you didn't list a class specific legal car in your requirements. Big time canted valve heads, ready to bolt on with a hydraulic cam. Sounds awesome to me.

I'm not against the Jeg's/Kaase heads but I almost feel guilty using something that awesome on a sub 6000 rpm motor. With their midlift #'s you could make some awesome midrange with the right cam. Would give me plenty of room to grow for my next project :cool:

I would go at least afr 185's, if you want real bigg power and still good velocity look at the TFS TW'r's, not many heads if any can beat it. checkout this http://www.airflowresearch.com/articles.htm and scroll all the way down you will find all the ultimate guides to cyl heads that MM&FF did in their magazine look at group 4 and 5 theres flow and dyno tests for each. As you will see just because a head has big flow doesnt mean it will make power. A stge 2 or 3 set of twisted wedge heads could be a good choice as well. I am building a 408 around the same as your 393 custom cam...etc and am having my TW's ported.

also see www.enginemasters.com and look at the 393 build under small block ford (2 parts) pretty impressive........


Good luck with your build, careful parts matching makes a world of difference and the custom cam is a great step but you will need head flow #'s first.

The cam will be the very last item I get, as far as I'm concerned, this is the only way to do it :cool: I was looking at some of the porting packages for the trick flow heads and even the TFS high ports. Since I don't have headers yet, and I still have to buy pistons, I could still go all the way to TFS R heads.

Look it's real easy and simple to get what you want! Just need the $$$.
Heres the low down...
408 or bigger....because....
you can keep the rpm's down and shtye tends to live longer when only needed to spin up to 6,000 rpms or less to simply achieve your goal.
Hyd cam works fine now...because of low shift point.
10.5 to 1 compreesion. (Pump Gas)
Super Victor intake....needed...(out-of- the-box) because of larger cross section verses the victor jr intake. You need more cross section because of larger cubes. Victor Jr. would work but need a lot of porting work done. That requires more $$

TFS-R out of the box would be plenty!!!!
AFR-225 would be plenty as well and allow to run a smaller cam with same H.P output over TFS_R heads. hint-hint- better drivabilty too!
AFR 205, 185 doesn't have enough cross section in my opinion.

You need volume along with flow to run strong.
750 mighty demon would be more then enough with awsome low end throttle response..Why a 750 and not a 850-950 carb... only going to go 6,000 rpms.
;)
End result.. a very fast street car on pump gas with a power range in the 3,000-6000 rpms!

I absolutely love my Canfield heads.

They are expensive but the quality of the work is 2nd to none.

I gotta give another vote for the jegs/kaase heads I just get shivers when I see/read/think about them and when a set will be mine for my 427w , the kaase numbers a crazy so i raise both hands for them

Hmm, there's a good chance that I'd be the only one in my neck of the woods running these (jegs/Kaase). I'd normally run away from anything with ports close to that big but the midlift #'s blow everything else away (intake, at least). The classes around here that I'd be able to run don't have any any regulations over the heads. The price is right too. I'll let you guys know at the end of October when the money will be there for the heads......

A shame you don't look closer at the Afr 205. I have them on my 393W. The midlift air flow is about the best in the industry.

Canfield heads are the way to go! They may be expensive but the work done using canfields are simply superb.
