I had a problem like this once and it turned out to be the fuel filter, sometimes it would run fine then bam, out the blue it would loose power and act like crap. I took a screw drive and push it through the filter, (roadside repair) and cleared the obstruction by pumping a little fule through it after the fix.
One other item might be the stator located inside the cap , the other is the module located outside on the side of the dist, I have had problems with both of these and simialr problems..
