Default 4cylinder conversion

I totaled my 90 GT and am looking to put my drivetrain in a coupe. I have not been able to find a decent 5.0 coupe in my price range and in my area. I did however find a 92 4cyl coupe. What is involved in putting a 5.0 in a 4cyl car?

grab it..iof you still have the GT its a swap over..noting to crazy..you will need for the full swap from the 5.0 GT cuz it differs
*fuel lines
*partial brake lines
*rear, trans, motor
*gauge cluster
*tranny crossmeber(unbolt 4 banger one..5.0 one goes in diffrent spot but holes are allready there)
*brake booster/master cylinder
*front end assembly(rotor,calaper, spindle)
*computer, computer wiring harness, headlight/alternator harness(makes life easier)
*pinion snubber
*quad shocks and mounts(4 banger has holes allready to accept the bolts)
*springs and shocks(unless you want a dragcar then leave the 4 banger suspension in..i recremend it)
*front swaybar(leave out if 60ft is key)/rear sway bar(4 bangers dont have one)

cant think of anything right now off the top of my head..if you are confident with ripping a motor out then the rest should be a breeze..just time consuming..word of advise..swapping pedal assemblies is a pain the first time you do it..very uncomfertable spot for very long time

email me if you got any more questions

If you have like 6 buddies helpin and you work 48 hours straight, and you God's gift to mecanics, then MAYBE. So no I think it will take longer than a weekend. More like a week or two.

i am gods gift to mechanics!!jk

Cool

I am currently doing this swap! I used a 87GT parts car and 89 4 cylinder coupe. Things that you need to be concerned about are buying a car that is in the same family as yours. What I mean by this is, If you buy a 92 coupe and have a 89GT you have to switch the wires under the dash to mate the wiring harness due to the air bag issues. 87-89 work fine together and 90-93 work great together for a swap. Everything else is pretty straight forward. If you have any more questions, just shoot me a email!!! I did the swap so I could get a coupe that had not been beat on yet!!!Plus it is cheap if you have a donor car. I spent $500.00 for my coupe!!

Thanks for the reply saleen243...how would I get the car to pass emmissions if the title says its a 4 cyl. Would I have to get the 5.0 to pass a 4cyl test?

The subject of emissions changes from state to state. I am in California where it is so crazy but you can do the swap and smog it as a V8 car as long as it meets the standard for a V8 5.0 for the same year of the car. There should be someone you can call within your state that can give you all the info you would need to be legal. Check with a local smog shop and see who they reference!!!

Thanks again Saleen. I have heard that CA is the roughest places for emmissions. I guess i need to call the DMV and see if there is someone intelligent enough to understand what I am talking about. If you have any other tips please let me know.

Cool

For what it is worth, do your self a favor and pick up the Helms books for your car (They can be found on the net). They cost about $14.00 but they made my conversion very complete. The drawings even cover emissions as well as wiring etc. If you need any help or have any questions, you can email me at saleen@gte.net ( My cars have GA Tags. I am from Warner Robins and they have no smog!!!)
