5.0 to 351 swap!

Hi guys I have a 91 5.0 I just bought and I am not sure if I want to keep the 5.0 or swap it for a 351 and stroke it out! What is involved? New motor mounts, wiring , and will it fit without modifing anything??? Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Karen:)

The 302 to 351 swap shouldn't be that bad.

You're looking at a new intake manifold, distributor, front accessory brackets, flywheel, amoung some other things.

There is an article in 5.0 a couple of months ago, If I remember I'll look it up at home. Or someone, who's done the change can post. :)

I just did this. Here's what you'll need if you want to run EFI:

1) Lower intake manifold for a 351W, almost all the uppers from a 5.0 will work.
2) Bigger injectors (24-30 lb., depending on the app.)
3) Better fuel delivery to feed the injectors
4) 351W Conv. oil pan
5) 351W swap headers. You can use the 5.0 H-pip but remember that the 351 is appx. 1.5 inches wider than a 302 so the H-pipe will need to be bent.
6) Good cooling system (I recommend using the engine mounted fan and shroud.....if you want to know why, PM me)
7) Taller valve covers (or have baffle plate removed) if you're using roller rockers.
8) 351W Distributor
9) Good engine mounts (I'm using Energy Suspension)
10) A cowl hood

Good luck and pm me if you have more questions.

Why did ya pick such a old 351? Whats the difference?

Stang_ROTY 08-14-2002 11:47 AM

My main reason was becuase of the availability of the engine and the price. I yanked the block out of the Cougar for 150.00. The secondary reason is because I read that the pre-71 block all have a higher nickel content in them which actually makes them a stronger metal and harder to destroy.

Oh yeah,

The other difference is that the older blocks don't accept the roller lifters and cam without a retro-fit kit, which isn't cheap. Since my engine wasn't going to be seeing high RPM's (7K or above) I didn't bother going with the retro-fit kit.
