Default where to get the cheapest GT 40 crate motor?

I was looking in Jegs catalog at the GT 40 motor that has 345 HP for 3299 plus motor fee (however much that is). are there places that have them cheaper? ALso, could I keep everything else I have that is stock and use it for the new motor? Are there any other major parts I would need to buy? AND what do you think it would do in the 1/4 mile? IS IT WORTH IT, or should I go with a 347 stroker? MAny questions, many choices!

SOME ADVICE
Don't do burn outs in reverse it is very expensive

If you are going to go through with buying a new motor, I would really reccomend looking into something other than the GT40 crate motor. Is it a good motor? Yes it is, but there are better ones out there for sure.

Check out DSS in the mustang mags. If I were you I'd look into one of their bullet shortblocks, then buying a set of heads seperately. Their base 306shortblock is $1499, then if you dont want to go too serious, then get a set of GT40P's (this would be comparable to the GT40 crate motor) from Summit for like $550 (you'll also need the headers ~$200)

So if you go this route, you'll save atleast $1000 on the longblock, or your could go after a nice set of aluminum heads (AFR, TFS....), still save money, and have an awesome motor.

fiveoh- thats exactly the advice i need and was looking for. i am not knowledgeble with motors at all. I am looking for a fast as crap daily driven (in the summer) car. One that will possibly run mid-high 12's. Is this possible with keeping the stock intake? You mentioned DSS, what does this stand for and would I find it in the JEGS magazine?

So basically what I am looking for is the block and heads, correct? (trying to get the lingo down for when i search for products) Thanks for the information. I know i sound ignorant with this info, BUT I AM!

DSS is the name of a company that sells motors and other various parts

A shortblock will consist of just the block, with the crankshaft/rods/pistons all assembled

A longblock has the same as a shortblock as well as the heads installed. Some you can buy with a cam and timing chain installed too but not many.


you dont sound ignorant, you gotta start somewhere

no matter what you buy, you do NOT want to use the stock intake. With the money you spend from the $3000 motor you were thinking about, you can easily buy a very nice intake, cam, and set of heads

well i didnt buy the install kit i bought the stuff sepratly i just got to get the timing straightend out then break the motor in and tell u what i run

hey drtbiker, I see in your sig that you shouldn't do burnouts in reverse because it gets very expensive

I learned that the hard way too

seriously f***ed up reverse, the slider gear and idler gear ended up in a pile in the bottom of the case, somehow they didn't damage the cluster gear, thank god.
I did the rebuild myself so it wasn't too bad and got a pro 5.0 while I was at it

Forward gears are much much stronger

If you get a nice set of heads, intake and cam, put slicks on it, and get your nitrous to work properly then low 12's are definately easy to come by on the motor, and low 11's on the juice

ok ive been scoping things out and here is what im looking at, but im looking to shave it sown a bit if possible; thats where i need help!

306 balanced blue printed short block $1495 (w/o cam and chain)

gt 40 x head assemblies (whatever this is) $1150

do i need a new intake? upper and lower?
if so, vortech sells a upper and lower intake for 699

so this is about 3200 without the cam and chain if needed- any ideas for getting the price down with the same power.

or is this combo crappy? help me out, i mknow nothing about this stuff- my goal again is to run low - mid 12's and keep it a daily driver in the summers.

yes that is a crappy combo. The GT40-x heads and the vortech intakes are both a huge waste of money.

go with AFR 165 heads ~ $1250
Edelbrock Performer RPM ~$500
then call anderson ford, tell them what you'll have, and what you want to do with the car, and they'll get you a great cam for it. ~250

this combined with that shortblock will put you at about $3500, and if you have sticky tires and can drive well, it will be easy low 12's, if not some high 11's

But whenever you jump into a project of this caliber, you need to add atleast a few hundred more bucks for the cost of gaskets, and other random parts.

any way to cut the price down to about 3 grand for total parts? i then have to pay someone to install the parts. probably 600 bucks im guessing?

used cobra intake ~300 ($400 for new)
TFS heads ~$925 from JD's perfomance
off the shelf cam, under $200

this will still have you solidly in the 12's but not nearly as easily as with the other combo
