5.0 or 4.9?

Alright, can someone please tell me the deal here. I know I have a 302 and I know it says 5.0 on each side of the car. Is this fualts advertisement of what? I've heard and seen people and magazines often refer to the 5.0 as a 4.9. Did Ford decide to roundup to the nearest whole number or what? Also, If you could please tell me what the liter designation is for, I'd really appreciate it.

actual metric displacement of the 302 is about 4,949cc's (4,948.893328 to be precise).multiply the CID (cubic inch displacement) of an engine by 16.387064 to find it's metric displacement in cc's. divide the displacement (in cc's) of a metric engine by 16.387064 to find it's CID.

The 302ci Ford is technically 4949cc's or 4.9 liters.

The reason Ford named it 5.0L primarily to avoid confusion with the 300ci I-6 4.9L engine. It also sounds better, and was probably more marketable against the 305 (true 5.0L) GM engine.

Actually, PG, if you want to get really technical the displacement of the 302 is really 301.592894745ci, making the real displacement in cc's 4942.22206813. Still 4.9L though. Hehehe.

pi multiplied by the radius squared multiplied by the height gives displacement of a cylinder. pi(r^2)h
