5.0's burning oil??

Do the 5.0's commonly burn oil?? If, so....How much is common?How about common leaks? When I purchase my 5.0, I want to make sure it doesn't burn oil.

Yes, the 5.0L burns oil. On average, 1 quart per 1000mi+ is considered normal. Most 5.0's in good shape take adding 1 quart per 3000mi oil change.

I believe Mustangs will burn oil if you don't mod the bottom end and don't overhaul. I had my stockers worked over with milling, bigger valves, new springs.

I currently have to add 1qt. a week. The motor was in good shape when I got it 2 1/2 yrs ago with 80k mi. on it. Now it's got 132k under it's belt.

When you go hunting for your stang, try getting down low enough to see if there is any oil where the oil pan drain plug is, and the underside of the bellhousing( which is lined up with the oil pan). These areas wet with oil would be a sign of a bad rear main seal. This would be bad

and expensive.

Checking the dipstick wouldn't be a bad idea either. If the previous owner used too light of oil grade then the dipstick might have a little dark tint to it.

i dont burn any oil. it stays full until my next oil change. it has 95k on the clock too. i never had to add any oil between oil changes sinnce i bought it 2 years ago with 83k on it.

if you burn 1 quart within 3000 miles you are fine.

It's not uncommon, but if your burning more than 1 quart in 3000miles I'd think that would be a bit excessive. I went in to change the rear main on mine (what a huge PITA!) and it turned out to be the freaking oil pan gasket leaking

Now I gotta pull it down and change the gasket, I just don't have the energy for that right now.

My oil pan gasket has a sweat and my motor sucks down about a quart and a half between oil changes.
If you want one that doesn't burn oil your best bet is going to be a 93-95 motor or another one without forged pistons. Forged pistons can't fit the bore as tightly when cold and that'll cause a little oil consumption.

Well my clock is around 188k miles, has an oil cooler, and never do i have to add oil, it stays full, the rear main leaks, like a drip a day, so its not a problem, think it fxed itself

also my motor may have been rebuilt sometime in its day, but the 2 and a half years i owned it, it has seen at least 800 passes down the 1/4, and it does'nt burn any oil, I also tighten my valve covers like every month or so, and use only 10-30 havoline synthetic, for a while i was using 20w-50 racing oil, and it didnt burn any then either.

red, i thought it was the moly rings that made some of the Stangs comsume a little oil?

My understanding is that it is a bit of both, the forged pistons and the moly rings. Both these items increase durability but cost a little oil.
FYI, my dad's Mercedes 300E seemed to be using a bit of oil and the head of the service department showed my dad the shop manual from MB and it said that the motor is expected to use 1 quart of oil every 1000miles!
