5.7L in a mustang? Pictures inside

No, not a GM 5.7L, but a stroked Ford 347:D

My ole' 302 started blowing a good amount of smoke, so I decided to make the jump up and bought a 347 shortblock out at world ford challenge a few weeks back.
Until I can aford a set of Victor Jr's, I'll be using my current heads and intake.
Heads are GT40P's that have been given a fairly heavy port job. They outflow GT40X's by 5-10CFM across the board on intake and exhaust. Intake is an Explorer that has been treated with a pretty hefty port job as well (no flow numbers). And the cam is an Anderson Ford Motorsport N4, Specs with my 1.7rockers are:
.544/.544 lift, 222/232 @0.050"

Goal with this setup is to go 11's NA, and I think that should be pretty easily attained. The nitrous will sit in the garage until I can afford a Tremec, cause I don't think a 100,000+mile T-5 will want to hold up to 10second passes for very long:)

Anyway, heres some pictures I've taken in the process. It will be running next weekend.

Still not a great looking engine bay, but its about 20times better than before. Did some cleaning, painting, and a little re-routing just so I don't cringe as much everytime I pop the hood.

Nice! Welcome to the club:) By the way...:o a 347 is a 5.6 :D

fiveohpatrol 06-09-2003 08:52 AM

using 61.01cubic inches per liter, 347/61.01=5.688. I just rounded up a tad :D

Dark_5.0 06-09-2003 08:53 AM

Nice man, For a second I thought you dropped an LS1 motor in you stang:o

jruppert 06-09-2003 02:00 PM

nice setup, let me know how it runs. also, let me know if you have any trouble with any crankcase pressure. i had to go with some air breathers because it wanted to blow oil out the dipstick. I was told by coast perf that the 347's build more pressure.

That looks great. What a setup!!!!

Just got it goin good and got some breakin miles on it this past weekend. This thing pulls VERY hard now. The torque is absolutely amazing.
I can feel the power falling off after 5000rpm because of the small heads and intake, but until I can afford some AFRs, I'll live with the gobs of low end torque:)

Looks beautiful!!!

tell me though, did someone hit the pass fenderwell w/ some birdshot?

:D

Looks killer Bro!

Take care,
~Chris

All those beautiful holes are geniune Ford originals.

Did the guy's on Ford's assebly line just get trigger happy or do all these holes actually serve a purpose?
I'd love to weld them up and smooth it out, but thats gonna take alot more time and patience than I've got.

Coupe50h 06-30-2003 11:47 AM

looks great, and so does that intake, my intake came like that, but the machine shop must have banged mine around, cuz it's chipping paint now.
i want to build a 331, which i will have to use my same heads and intake as well, so are those comp cams springs holding up fiveohpatrol?:p

LX XLR8R 06-30-2003 12:26 PM

looks good..im doing a 331 now unless i get some extra cash and do a "R" or dart block then i will do a 347/360..btw if i rember correcly a mustang is only a 4.9L rounded up to a 5.0

You're right, its actually a 4.94L but to keep it from being confused with the inline 6 cylinder 4.9L they rounded it up.
Sounds better anyway:)

Coupe50h, my intake didn't look too great beforehand either. I cleaned that thing with a couple cans of brake cleaner and engine degreaser and it still wouldnt come clean. So I just decided to see what some "aluminum" colored high temp engine paint would look like on it, and it turned out REALLY well. I'm very impressed with the stuff. Its the Dupli-color stuff you can get at wallmart or autozone or wherever. I painted my upper, lower, timing cover, and a few other brackets and it looks a ton better than it did before. A friend of mine couldn't even tell that it was paint on my intake, he just thought I got it really clean:p

Coupe50h 06-30-2003 12:46 PM

yea i happen to have a can of that high temp ceramic aluminum color laying around, but i only painted my plate on the top.......thnx for the info though, how did you get the old rubberized paint off?

LOL! Nope. Never owned a Mustang, period. I'm an Olds man, when it comes to my personal choice, I just work on a lot of Mustangs.

:)

Take care,
~Chris
