nope not using the Dart block. I'm using a FRPP 351 block from the motorsports catalog.

Ron1 11-04-2002 02:09 PM

Eric, How big a tire are you running and how much does the car weigh?

Ron

Eric4Nitrous 11-04-2002 02:19 PM

Ron the car isn't completed yet..but when it is..i will be running a 33 1/2 tall 17 inch wide Mickey Thompson ET Drag. Car with me in it should weight 2350. Nitrous cars get huge weightbreaks in NMRA.

Ron1 11-04-2002 02:36 PM

So basically your rear end housing will be about 12 inches wide:)..and 2350 pounds, how fast are we planning on going? What I find interesting is your 1/8 mile. I looked at my log book, and my best 1/8 was a 6.17, but also at 110 MPH and that at 3250. I was just thinking about what that would have been at 2350....I'm going on a fast...till next March

Ron

Eric4Nitrous 11-04-2002 03:43 PM

I'm not talking about my nova.lol It's only mini-tubbed. My 02 GT that's being built will be the light car with the big tires :) It should run anywhere from 6.70-6.80's at around 215mph on three stages.

Ron1 11-04-2002 04:00 PM

Holy road apples Batman...high 6's. What is your background in the NMRA? And what did you run before this car? Pictures? And doesn't B.Glidden hold the record at 6.81@208?

ron

jim_howard_pdx 11-04-2002 04:21 PM

I gotta side with Ron here bud,

My computer is saying 7.6 to 7.9 second quarters even with your nitrous triple stage. Now if you go with a 514 stroker with at least 1200 HP then 6's might be yours.

Just figure to run 6's you will need a full space frame chassis, aluminum sheets for floors and side panels, and a weight of 2050 with driver and fuel. You will be hanging on a body just to cut the wind away from the track long enough to rocket down the strip.

Just how long do you expect a 351 block to run 6's or 7's. You had better plan on filling the block and going for some other pretty radical changes.

Gotta say......
I would love to see you do it!

Eric4Nitrous 11-04-2002 04:47 PM

Ron, i haven't had a chance to run NMRA yet because of nitrous backfires and such last season. But this year i have committed to running a full NMRA schedule. The 420 windsor that i'm running this year came out of my 89 GT that i had. It went 7.02 199.96 mph at 2560lbs on TWO stages. So saying it will go 7.6-7.9 this year is just plain out stupid Jim. :) The car is going to be a Full tube chassis, Set up just like a NHRA pro stocker, Double Chrome-moly frame rails, Stripped out inside with just one racing seat, and full competition cage. haha i don't need a damn 514 to go 6's. My motor dyno'd on two stages at 1653 hp. Put that in a car that weights 2350pds and hello 6's :) Yes Billy does hold the record for this year, but i can honestly say that he's got something up his sleeve for this coming year and that record won't stay long. :) I'm not saying my car will break his 208mph record but it will go over 200mph and well into the 6's.

jim_howard_pdx 11-04-2002 07:48 PM

Eric

You the man! Yes you have what it take to go 6 seconds.

Man I would love to wrench on your rocket engine... That must be one sweet ride.

No wonder you give Kevin Price such a rash......

Stay safe friend, 6 seconds is a great et, or the time it takes to call the Coroner. I tell that to my son everytime he races. Safety first.

Ron1 11-04-2002 08:18 PM

Outstanding Eric...when I went for my S/G, S/C license I was strapped into a 7.50 car. Really makes your eye balls jump. Made it in the required number of passes. Pure adrenaline....a great drug. I don't think I wil ever see that ET or MPH again, but I still like the feeling. Maybe some high 8's in mine. Then I will be satisfied....

Ron

Of course I also said that about 12's, 11's, 10's, 9's....

Eric4Nitrous 11-04-2002 08:34 PM

I give Kevin props to his car. I only give Kevin a hard time because he's such a great friend. He messes with me/vice versa. But thank you guys for the nice replies. I appreciate it. Jim, it's not really alot to work on. It has VERY low maintenance compared to most Pro 5.0 motors. But nevertheless if you get a chance come to an NMRA race and stop by and say hi.

jim_howard_pdx 11-05-2002 02:36 PM

You can never be too wealthy

too thin

or too fast!

I'm going to have to go through some routine in order to legally run 9's right? What's that all about? Make a few passes down the track and pay for a license, or what?

Eric4Nitrous 11-05-2002 03:26 PM

When I got my competition license i had to make three back to back full throttle runs in a 7.50 class car as well. If you can properly stage the car, etc and run full three top speed passes then you got it. At least that's how it worked for me. Maybe it's changed??

Ron1 11-05-2002 04:42 PM

For me the chassis certification was step one. The NHRA official came out to the house, and went through all the requirements. Everything in the car was exposed so he could check all the hard points on the cage, 5 point harness, seat location, head clearance and the rest. Got my sticker on the cage, good for 3 years. $75.00. I went to Frank Hawleys Drag Racing School to get mine, but a good friend just got his 2 weeks ago and he had to make 2 moderate passes, lift at the 1/8 mile marker, and then 3 full WOT. It was 1 track official and 2 other licensed drivers (in the 7.50 bracket) Once everybody signs off, you mail the time slips to the NHRA with the form, and the results of your physical. I think because I went for SG/SC and ET brackets is was a total of $60.00 for mine. License good for 2 years.

Ron

ultraflo 11-06-2002 02:24 PM

Thanks for the info Eric and Ron... I'm not looking forward to the physical exam, but everything else should be alright. I'm going to talk to my uncle (he's got an NHRA license) about it, and maybe have him go with me to get mine. I've got alot of other stuff to take care of before I worry about a license... just thought I'd ask since Ron mentioned it.

signing off............

Eric4Nitrous 11-06-2002 02:31 PM

I pray Ryan that you don't get a gay doctor doing your physical..lmao.

Kevin Price 11-06-2002 08:08 PM

When I went for my physical I had the "cough" test and that's about as bad as it got. I had to make a total of 6 passes, 2 all out.

I imagine Eric likes to go fast because he probably gets the "finger" test in his physical. Really Eric, you don't need a physical every other day!!!! :D :D :D

Geeez, I'm a heavyweight. I tip the scales at almost 2900 pounds and I only weigh 190. Mine isn't full tube chassis so that makes a big difference. I can't wait to see what a little shot of juice will do.

Eric4Nitrous 11-06-2002 08:40 PM

lmao Kevin. I'll tell ya what a little bit of juice will do for ya..Tick, Tick, BOOM.lol haha

jim_howard_pdx 11-06-2002 09:28 PM

In 1976 one of my best friends built a 327 engine with shaved heads and dome pistons giving him a 14 to 1 static compression ratio. He used the famous "pink" camshaft, the first factory cam to deliver more than 1 horsepower per cubic inch.

At the street races Grant liked to add two or three drops of nitroglycerine to every gallon of fuel (102 octane pump supreme). He also added extra tetraethyl lead to bump the octane up to about 108 or just a little higher.

One night he lost a race and wanted a rematch. He decided to try 6 drops of nitroglycerine to ensure victory. The engine exploded at the starting line. One piston flew about 20 feet into the air the intake shattered like a piece of china, and I think we never did find a significant portion of the head that grenaded.

The impact of the explosion blew his hood off one hinge after the piston made its brave escape. The block cracked both across the webs and longitudinally with the bore on the passenger side of the block.

I had seen nitro-methane dragsters detonate like this but never a street engine.

So practice safe NOS out there guys. You are running some quick brackets with engines built on the edge of their performance envelopes.

Grant figured he was running safe, he was headed to cal tech and works today at the jet propulsion laboratory. I still tease him that the piston was after him for using so much go juice.

...you had to pee in a cup, right? And the doc gets to grab ahold of your testes? I'm beginning to wonder if it's all worth the trouble just to make some 9 sec. passes down the 1320'

:p

Of course it's gonna be worth it... once I get the physical out of the way

Kevin Price 11-07-2002 09:26 AM

Yes, had to pee in a cup. That's no biggie, just watch your aim. :)

It's worth it to make a 9 sec pass, trust me.

I meant ET record. Anybody in their right mind knows that. :) Sorry if i didn't make it clearer.
