Default 84 GT headers??

I just bought a 1984 mustang GT with the 20th GT350 package on it, i wanted to put headers and duals on it cause it doesnt have them, the car is basically untouched from stock. Does anyone know where i can purchase headers for this model car, cause all i have found is stuff for the 86 stang and up, or 79 and lowers, also does anyone know a site that may have stuff for the early 80s stangs? cause id like to do some mild performance upgrades on it and i dont wanna risk trying to fit 86 and up parts on it if they wont work. also the car is a 5.0 with a 4 barrel holley just in case that matters on the headers. anyways any input would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone knows where i can get parts to my 84 please drop me an e-mail with the URL to the site. thanks

Dusty

Hi I'm new here but I beleive that I can help you out. I have an 85 GT and I have had the same problem. Any header for the 86 on up will work. To get "true" dual exhaust you will need to get a double hump crossmember from an 86 or later stang. Then you will need to puchase an h-pipe, cat back system, and the hanger kit for 86 and later exhausts. Any thing else?

Also pretty much any thing you can get for the 86-93 will work on your car with the exception of the roller cams offered unless you get a retrofit kit for the block. I would upgrad the intake and the carb if they are original. The stock Holley is only 585cfm and the intake is really restrictive.

k thanks guys, um well i can do those things pretty easily, but i was also curious, what kind of headers would work best? im thinking of running full length, but i didnt know if shortys would be better? also what other mild mods can be done for some gain, im not looking for another beast like my 89 stang, i just want a mildly hopped up car that will run alright and get me places while having some umph for that occasional fbody

Thumbs up JBA

JBA makes headers for the 79-85 Mustang with the heat riser, the little stove pipe looking thing on your headers.

But a lot of people just ignore that, what it does I have no clue but I know it is called a heat riser. One other thing I would upgrade is the rear axle you have a glass-jawed 7.5 inch rearend get an 8.8 in there, with a set of good gears.

I would also step uo to maybe a 600 Holley and Eddy performer intake manifold, and later on invest in some heads.

well, my 7.5 lasted for a LONG time... sitting out in the garage because one of the bearings was going south...60+ 1/4 passes and driving every day... if you dont plan on running DR's or slicks... the 7.5 should hold up fine...

there are ALOT of cams for the early 302..any Hyd. cam will work..

I got BBK ceramics for my 84... crossmember... etc.. the only HARD part is putting a mount for the rear hangar on the drivers side..

probably a performer intake if you need to pass smog.. if you want to keep the EGR... 600 holley...

Thumbs up

Thanks guys,

I am not at all worried about passing smog legality, i live in Ok and you can get away with anything on your car in the town i live in, so smog isnt a concern, one thing i did find out is that i have a 600 cfm holley already installed, but one thing i was curious about was what companies were you able to find decent parts for good prices from? I checked the usual Jegs and Summit and i flipped through my mustang mags, nobody seems to really offer anything for the 84s, is it not that popular of a stang to build or is it just cause of the high demand for 87-93 parts? eh either way does anyone know a good manufacturer that has a decent waranty and such?

Thanks again. .

most of the mags have FI stuff..but there are WAY more intake options for a carbed car...alot cheaper too.... depends on what you are looking for really... sway bars, springs etc are all interchangeable...I put 86-up sway bars on my 84 because they are bigger...

what are you looking for anyway?

just the basics for now, headers, maybe a new intake, suspension stuff to get the car handling better, subframes, stuff like that, the motor itself is in decent condition and i wanna wait a while to do a major overhual if possible, but maily just bolt ons for the time being.

subframe connectors etc, are all the same... strut tower brace is speceific for the 82-85 to clear the air cleaner..gspindles are different on the later ones for bigger brakes.. check edelbrock and weiand for intake... plenty of choices
