Post 2000 v6 auto vs. 1987 5.0 auto

My friend just bought a stock 1987 5.0 L auto. He keeps telling me that it will beat my 2000 v6 auto (w/ dual borla exhaust) because he doesn't give the v6 any of the respect that it deserves. We went to a local road that has a long straight away at about 1:00 A.M. to run. I was pretty nervous, cause this 5.0 is pretty loud and mean sounding. We just called out 1,2,3 and went. I had traction control off and had considerable wheel (right...) spin at takeoff, but he had a pretty good start. He took me off the line by about 1/2 and it stayed that distance until I hit second gear when I started to pull past him. By the top of second I was about a car ahead of him and just kept slowly pulling on him until we hit about 100 m.p.h when we stopped (I would guess I was a couple cars ahead at this point). He was pretty impressed by the performance of the new v6s, especially since they can beat the old 5.0s.

Damn Lizard, we must have been typing simultaneously. Oh well, maybe great minds run in the same direction, LOL.

2000 V6's have 190hp. Figure the Borla dual added 10-12, so close to 200hp now. I dont think this is a BS kill. The 87 only has 25 more hp, and could potentially have more than a few problems, being that old, especially with the tranny. I think a stock 5.0 auto in great condition could run a 15.0. I stock auto v6 could run maybe a 15.5. It is a bit hard to swallow, but I could believe it.

Depending on how well the new V-6's run I think he might be able to beat him. The guy who ports my heads has a 90 LX hatch with a built AOD (2200 stall and shift kit) with 3.55 gears and bone stock everything else. He says he can only get mid 15's out of it. That is pretty bad if you ask me.

I saw in MM&FF where they got a 99 V6 5spd to 14.9's so figure the auto makes it a 15.3 I have seen several auto 5.0's only hit mid 15's so I don't have a problem beleiving this kill. Plus the borla dosn't hurt, that and the new AOD are a lot better than the old ones and the 99 probably had a lot less miles.

Sweet kill.

Just watch for the 99% of the 5.0's that arn't stock.

I believe it. One of my best friends used to have an 89 LX with an auto. It had a Mac H pipe, a mac cat back and a crane ignition and some other junk. It still only ran mid to high 15's. It had a LOT of miles though.

He doesnt sound like a flame starter anyway. And if the 5.0 is old and hasnt been upkept at all its very possible.

1966 Baby blue Coupe, 289 w/ man. 3-speed, nothing special but the fact that it is my first mustang. I am a former import guru....no more.

I've never run it except on the street, it has new wheels & tires, new exaust, and that about covers it. Looking to change a lot in the future including engine. Any ideas are appreciated.

Question

Are you guys serious???

A car length by 100 mph??
Well, if it's true, that had to either have been a 4 banger w/ 5.0 badges or one broke down 5.0.

With gears and full exhaust I was running 15.0-15.1 in my 89vert/aod. Not to take away from the new v-6s but, I'm thinking that 5.0 is tired.

My girlfriend had a 94 v6 firebird(manual) that surprised the heck out of me. It wouldn't out run my 5.0 by any means but it did surprise me. I think it was rated at 200hp or there about. Maybe the newer ones are stronger..

Did anyone else read the recent article where the v6s got together for a day at the track?? They had a v6 firebird that ran 12.8s with a blower... very impressive(to me anyhow). I think that most of the v6 mustangs were in the low 13s.

If either one of my mustangs EVER and I mean EVER run that poorly then it's going to the junk yard!!
Somebody should have told the kid with the 5.0 to take the emergency brake off!!
Either that or it had some major problems like you guys said.

A FEW car lengths up to 100 and you PULLED on him after he was ahead of you even though he has 25 more hp and a lot more tq... I'm sorry but the new v6's aren't that strong(even if the 5.0 was running bad), ESPECIALLY with an AUTO, and if your friends 5.0 was "mean sounding" it probably isn't stock which would stack the odds even more in his favor.... sorry don't belive it.... The AOD 5.0's are realtively slow in stock form, but not total dogs.... mine runs low 14's with just a few boltons...

Thumbs up

I think that the v6, with a few mods, would be able to run with the 5.0. It has surprising power and the 5.0 was an auto. Wasnt there problems witht he auto 5.0L back then?

anyway, i believe it

V6 hang with a 5.0. come on that statement cannot go uncorrected, modded v6 or not.
My bone stock 5.0 '88 notch ran 14.8 at 97mph. What does the v6 run 10mph slower - thats all day. Sorry to be harsh but lets cut the bs on the 5.0, i see it everywhere.

I'm not saying I can beat any stock 5.0 L out there, I love the 5.0 L engine. and sure, a lot of 5.0s were really fast, but for a few select years ford messed up and they werent any faster than today's v6s. Just accept it, there was nothing wrong with this 5.0. WHy dont you look up the stats on both cars and you'll see that i am telling the truth.
