89 heads on an 84 motor
bought a set of 89 GT 302 heads to put on my 84 302 motor.. A guy in 'street racer corner' claimed he read an article that said they would'nt fit without a piston change...
Any truth to this??? or is he just pullin my leg?? the guy i bought them from assure's me they will fit.... ------------------ Black, 84 GT, T5, ground effects, shorty headers, dual exh., rear spoiler from a 87.. |
Sorry Jerry, I wasn't pulling your leg. I really thought I read that. Go and read my post in the othter forum.

From everything I have heard and read they will work fine, just check your piston to valve clearance if you go with a bigger cam.

Yes they will fit but you should change the springs on them. Hydraulic Rollers tend to have more spring pressure b/c the valvetrain is heavier. On your flat tappet engine you may lose some power for the fact that the spring will be trying to close the valve faster on the lighter valvetrain. BTW, why do you wish to change your 84 heads for the 89's. The reason for Ford changing to the E7TE casting in 87 was to get a head that's construction was more like the 82-85 b/c the new 86 castings sucked. later, Violent ------------------ 84 GT-350, 2.5" Ram air hood, Centerline Pintails, 5-lug conversion, Recaro's, 140 speedo, 8.8 conversion, 3.73's, Motorsport A/C eliminator, Hurst shifter, ASP pulleys, Eibach pro kit, KYB's, Flowmaster exhaust, Long tubes, Flowtech off road h-pipe, .030 overbore, Extreme Energy 268, AFR 185's, CC Hi Tech Pushrods, CC Pro Magnum RR's, Pete Jackson Gear drive, 750 Speed Demon,Aeromotive 1000 hp pump, Aeromotive FPR, Aeromotive fuel filters,Weiand Xcelerator intake, Max Motorsports aluminum rack |
1bad89, no offence M8, you got me worried....
the reason for change is: I have heard how the newer heads 'flow' better than the older heads, besides, these new 89 heads are from a friend who no-longer ownes a mustang and he sold me the set (rebuilt, and ported) for $50.00.... ------------------ Black, 84 GT, T5, ground effects, shorty headers, dual exh., rear spoiler from a 87.. |
The 82-84 heads are not the E5TE's that are in the 85. They do not flow well so the switch is worthwhile, just change the valvesprings as noted earlier. Do check the piston to valve clearance, it should be okay, the pistons are not the same as the 86 5.0. The pistons in my stock 82 motor also had valve reliefs so I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

I've looked into this and i got a set of E7TE heads myself (my engine is dying so i never put them on, but i got them for free). The E7's have a smaller combustion chamber that brings the compression ratio up from 8.3:1 to 9:1 and I believe the intake port flows better. I've heard and read in books that it should give you a 10-15 horsepower/ft.lb. torque increase. They should fit with no problems, but as stated by Violent84 you should probably switch the valve springs, but they might actually work well for a larger lift cam.
