Question You Tell Me?

I'm working on a freinds mustang he hade a valve spring break but it didn't hit the piston I think. I put new springs on it and now after tighting the bolt down rocker arm it has to much lash. Could it be the lifter not pumped up all the way or could the valve did hit the piston? Have not done compression test yet to check the valve. Any ideas?
