Default Should I swap out my E303 cam? Current Dyno graph inside

I was thinking about going to a Comp XE270HR
218/224 @.050 270/276 Adv. .544/.544 lift 112*LSA
Do you think this is a good move?
The heads are obviously flowing well (FOX LAKE ported) since the power peak is up at 6000rpm's, right where the operator shut it down (since it was a dyno day and it was $30 for one run, I couldn't get them to re-run it up higher ). The peak torque, however, was way down at 3800 rpms (about 313ft/lbs). I want more torque from 4000 rpms on (until peak power is reached. The E303 did give a broad powerband but the car doesn't feel explosive until over 5000 rpms. I also have to run it up to 6500 at the track or my ET and trap speed suffer bigtime. I'm hoping that the COMp cam will peak lower, something like 6200.
Anyways, this is the cam that Comp reccommended for me and since the Ecam was able to make 289rwhp, I'm hoping that the comp one will eclipse the 300 mark .
What do you guys think? Or am I asking too much?

Is this the carbureted combo listed in your signature? Carbs like alot of rpm, and they wont make as much torque as a similiar FI motor. My cam peaks at 7200 and I have to shift it at 7600.

If you want more torque I'd look in to a different exhaust system. I'd also try to get as much rpm out of that thing as possible.

andy669 beat me too it.
yes the carb cars need to be reved higher, they will feel "explosive" after 5k on most any combos, remember the e-cam is a mild smog legal streetcam.
my friend had a combo similair to yours, but with a B-cam and longtubes, ported e7's, same carb, and using a vic jr. intake, it would rev high, trapped about 107-108 3050 lb car, i think the b-cam is intended for carb'd car's though.

I like my e-cam, but im thinking of going to a tfs-1 when my water pump takes a crap..... the e-cam wont see much more than 5900 rpms without falling off on power.

You might consider the tfs stage 2 cam also....

I'm going by several dyno tests I've seen and almost all the tests had the peak torque at 4000-4500RPMs, I need more power in that range. But anyways, even if I want more RPM I'm going to need more cam than the E303, Oh well, I'm going with the XE270, we'll see how it works out.

it should work good, but remember, you'll have more lift with the 1.7's... I'd check the valve springs and P/V clearance..

The lift is with 1.7 rockers, the lobe lift is.320" so it would be .512" with 1.6's.

I think I found out why my car was weak in the 4000-5000 range, turns out that I had a different distributor than my stock 82 one and it was adding 36* of advance (18L advance slot) to go with my 16* of initial, giving me 52* total! No wonder I always had to run 94 octane gas! I can't believe that it still ran as well as it did!.
Anyways, thanks guys, live and learn.

Default hey

Yes I would go with a bigger cam. It is what I should have done but I have a stock short block. I got a Ford Racing crate engine the 345 hp one with gt40 x heads, b-303 cam, 1.7 RRs, edelbrock rpm"air gap" intake, road demon 625 cfm carb, hooker super competition headers 1 5/8 3" collectors. This is a dyno that car craft did on the motor. It would translate to about 315 horsepower at the wheels. What do you think ?

Yeah, the ford crate motors just about always exceed their advertised power. A split duration cam would really wake that motor up though.
I'm currently rebuilding my motor (had a little problem with a whole lot of water in my crakcase, washing out all the bearings-due to an intake gasket ). Had the heads and deck milled to give me just under 10:1 compression so I'll have to see how it'll do now. My next move is going to be longtube headers, then I'll probably spray it (gotta make those forged pistons earn their keep )

Default I Desktop Dyno'd your engine...

And in the "perfect world" your current combo came up with 391 hp @ 6500 (Remember this is flywheel ponies) and 369 ft. lbs. of torque at 5500.

I changed NOTHING but the cam, and the new numbers are....

Sorry, couldn't resist that. New numbers are 382hp @ 6000 and 383 ft lbs @ 4500 So in the long run, you're sacraficing some top end HP for the sake of "sit your ass down" torque down in the RPM range that you wanted. On a side note, bigger headers will get you back some of the HP the cam will be losing you.

Let us know what you decide!
