advice on rear main seal
is there any possible way to replace the rear main seal without pulling the tranny and bell housing??
also when replacing the seal do you have to loosen off all of the bearing caps or can you just remove the rear one and slide the seal around? I would love to be able to do this in an afternoon but I see an entire weekend job here what about that junk you can buy to help stop leaks, I know I will have to replace the seal but I would also like to postpone it for a while |
There's a guy just outside of town named Jack. Try and find him. He has these magic beans, and they might make everything all better for you.
:) Sorry dude, tranny has to come out, and nothing short of roofing tar is going to slow the leak down. It's really not that big of a deal. Especially once you just accept what has to be done. You could easily do it in an afternoon, provided you think it through ahead of time, and be prepared to do what you have to do. You'll be bragging about it next week. :) Take care, ~Chris |
Yep. You get the pleasure of removing (in this order):
- The H-pipe - The Tranny & Driveshaft - The Bellhousing - The Clutch and Flywheel - The old leaky rear-main seal -- I think it's like $10 from Ford. All that fun to install a $10 part. Better give yourself a good Saturday to do it and ask a friend to come over and help. You'll be glad you did it once you're done. Good luck, E |

ROFLMFAO!! Of course if you don't want to pull the tranny, you could always pull the motor. A lot more work though. I think the chilton manual says this is a 4.5 hr job(pulling tranny). That is, of course, if everything goes right. Which for most people, it doesn't. I know a guy who it took him 2 days to change the clutch. |
well I just rebuilt the tranny a few months ago so I know what I'm doing and nothing should be stubborn so I should be able to easily do it in a day but it's one of those things that I just don't want to do
went and got the seal today is there anything else I should change while I have it apart? |
one more thing
will I need a clutch alignment tool to put this thing back together? |
Yes, you will need a clutch alignment tool.
