I put a rebuilt one on my older van a couple of years back from Auto Zone, and it only cost about $20.
If you have emission testing, better just put one on. It's a fairly easy job.

If you have no cats then, yes, you can just run a short belt. If you have cats, you should replace it so that sufficient air is pumped to the cats so that they work. If you don't , they will eventually get clogged.

Gonna see if I can find some string or a tape measure and get a measurement for a shorter belt.

thats the best way to measure for a shorter belt i usually use a string then subtract about a 1/4 inch and find the closest belt size if they don't have an exact fit (they never have the exact size you need) i have had to be pretty creative at times trying to fit a belt on that was just a little too small but a little too small is better than a little too big

Remember to reverse the S that goes around the crankshaft and water pump when going with a shorter belt. This will keep the belt from hitting itself up by the tensioner.

All i did to fix it was to remove the tensioner, and drill a new pilot hole in the mounting bracket for the little nub on the back of the tensioner so I could rotate it counterclockwise about 45degrees

That's way more than you needed to do. You just needed to change the routing so that the belt goes around the alternator from the bottom of the crankshaft pulley instead of the top of the water pump pulley. Attached is a diagram. Make sure that when you measure for a new belt that you measure the same belt routing that is in red.

the only thing about routing the belt that way is you will be spinning the water pump backwards while most of the time it doesn't matter (I have run my cobra like this for years) I have had a couple of cars that would heat up with the pump spinning in reverse(my coupe got over 220 degrees so i rerouted the belt to spin the other direction and the temp went back down.

Got a measurement
Went out and measured for the belt length that I need, the closest belt so far that might work is 65 inches.
