Exclamation my car idles like hell! HELP ME!

Ok, the last time I drove my car it ran great. Every now and then I had a little idle trouble when I would first start it up when it was warm.

Today I put on a Black Magic electric fan, and when I started the car (with the fan off), it ran at about 1000 rpm, then dropped to 500, then to 800, then back and forth until it finally died out. I restarted it, and it did the same thing, but when I gave it gas it ran fine.

So I shut the car off and and pulled the greey peice out of that wire (I can't think of the name of it, the thing you pull to adjust the timing), and loosend the distributor. when my friend restarted it, I moved it just a bit and it idled a little better and then died out. I moved the dist accidentally and I heard the fuel pump come on and shut off (like when you first put the key in), and I moved it again, and it did it again. I was like what the hell is going on? Someone please help me!

When you move your distributor with the ignition on, the computer probably thinks the engine is turning over and fires one of the injectors and the fuel pump comes on for a second.
I would set the timing with a timing light and then check to make sure your Idle Air Bypass valve is not sticking for starters.

Ok, where is my idle bypass valve at? I'll give that a shot.

The reason your fuel pump goes on and of is because of the pip sensor in the dist. It is called the primary ignition pickup sensor and when the dist is moved in any way (being cranked or moved by hand) it does this.

The idle air bypass is on the side of the throttle body. It is long and cylindrical looking with a little black connector on the end. Take this off and clean it good with carb or brake cleaner.

Do you have an open element K&N filter? If so you could be getting fan wash. Play with the position of your mass air meter and see if it idles better.

Good Luck,

Jason

The IAC valve is the cylinder thing on your TB. 2 small bolts hold it on, take it off, and clean it out. Also if you converted your car frm SD to MAF, there is a plug in the vacuum tree. It is I think the 2nd one from the left. unplug it, that may help. You might also check your TPS.

Ok, I'll give that a shot today. This sounds stupid, but which side is the IAB valve on? The thing on the TB towards the front of the car on an angle is the TPS right? How do I adjust that?

I'm gonna go run out and get some cleaner and gaskets.

Ok, I got the TB off, and the TPS is on top of that right? The IAV is the one on the front. I'm gonna pull off the egr, and clean the hell out of everything. I just need to know how to adjust the TPS.
