Question alternator pulley swap

Anyone know how to swap pulleys on the alternator without taking the alternator off? Can you just leave the belt on and then buzz the new one back on?

It's pretty easy - if you have an impact. Leave the belt tensioner on and break the pulley nut lose. Take an 18MM socket and take tension off belt. Put new pully on reverse process.

If you've got a stock 65amp alt on your stang - watch your battery charging - when you've got a lot of accessories turned on. The stock alt is a bit underpowered for these cars with accessories - when you change the rpm of alt - you're going to get less total amps.

We went with a PA-Performance 130amp 3G upgrade as we've got a BlackMagic flex-a-lite fan, and my 16-year old wants to put a stereo in the car.

Yeah, lol, it was like taking candy from a baby. Me and this buddy were out there (Green Bay, WI) and it's like 5 degrees out. We just took the belt off and stuck an allen wrench through a couple of the blades of the alternator. Then we took a 15/16 1/2" drive and it came right off. We were done before any snotsickles set in.

I just got a Powermaster 140 amp two weeks ago and we thought the March alternator pulley wouldn't kill the alternator but it seems like it was starting to. It took about a year for the March pulley to kill the old 75 amp stock alternator.

No more evil alternator pulleys!

I talked to the guy at PA-Performance and he recommended we just use the pully that comes on the 3G alt. He said that you really don't gain much by swapping out the alt pulley, so we left it on. Besides if we changed the pully it voids the life-time warranty on the unit.

Thanx for the info. I can see where you really don't lose power by having the stock one on. I just wasted this guy with a Tahoe and exhaust. He had a half car head start and everything. I know they are tanks but my girlfriend got a kick out of it too.
