Exclamation Another TFI Module Failure

Finally it happened to me.

With 145K on the odo, the engine died abruptly on the 210 Fwy in Pasadena.

Numerous attempts to restart the car were useless.

After towing the car home, I checked for fuel...the 255 in-tank pump was working, same with the T-rex (I could hear both). I removed the coil wire and checked for spark...none. I swapped coils, and the engine still wouldn't catch...

At that point, I figured it was the TFI Module.

After buying the TFI module from the dealer ($112 w/tax), and a set of 1/4" drive deep sockets from Sears ($20), the car was back in action.

From what I have seen, it's not a matter of IF, but WHEN, your TFI module will go south.

Therefore, I suggest this -- go to a junkyard and buy a used TFI module. Store it in your glove box with a few tools.

I wouldn't have been stranded if I had done this...you can always buy a new TFI module after you get back on the road. But the point is that you can get back on the road if you have the spare.

Stupid thick film technology!

I'm surprised it lasted even that long.

Thanks for the tip. Summit does have it for about $48 I believe it's made by Pertronix.

What sux is that when it goes out, you need it right away, no time to wait for mail order. Like you said, maybe it's better to order it now.

Yeah me too.

They say the TFI Module's life is related to the amount of load it has to deal with, and how hard you drive. If that's the case then mine should be failing every 500 miles
