Default Part out my GT or fix it???

Ok, as most of you know I have a 91 Mustang GT vert that I bought wrecked and was gonna fix. However I'm now thinking about just swaping all the motor, tranny, etc stuff over to the LX.

The GT's frame is bent, it also needs body work because the the body pannels don't line up worth ****. Also it has new paint.....but it's a cheapo job that was shot on ultra thick. And of course it will need paint. Also it's been wrecked several times before. Also in general the GT is trashier than the LX condition wise.

The LX has a nearly straight body (coupe of dings) and has never been wrecked. It's also in pretty damn good condition. I've got a bud who's a mechanic and he said that if I brought him LX the with the brakes, rear-end, and pedal assembly from the GT already in, he would yank the motor/tranny from the LX, and yank the motor/tranny from the GT and put the GT's motor in the LX. He would also install the gauge cluster and wiring harness/eec. Drop it off on Friday afternoon, pick it up on Sunday night. All for $400

So I'm thinking about swapping the stuff over to the LX and then parting out the GT. There is a lot of good stuff I could sell off of it. top, top motors, front cap, GT effects, rear bumper, deck lid, interior, etc. This would leave me some money to save and/or mod the LX up with.

On the flip side, while the LX would be faster and nicer, it wouldn't be a vert. Also I wouldn't have a toy anymore, right now the LX is my daily driver and the GT is like a toy. If I swap the motor into my LX, it will have to be my daily driver and toy.

What do you guys think?

This is the GT as it sits now. You can't see it in the pics but the front cap doesn't line up worth crap. The front bumper cover is off by up to 1/4" in places.

Ive heard that fox body frames will never be the same after they have been bent and in wrecks. I would just part it out. Of course I dont really like verts too much so maybe thats why

Cool

if you really want a convertable, and if you really want that convertable then fix it. if the frame shop does the job right then it doesnt matter about the wreck. however you will likely spend more than the car is worth repairing it, so i would swap everything out to the LX and part the rest out and find a good ver to start with.

I think I would look for a better vert to start with if that is what you really want.

Looks like its been abused.. I hate to see a mustang like that. Its up to you but you may be able to find a better vert for not too much money.

I'd throw everything into the LX, plus, it makes a kind of sleeper then too.

Thumbs up

My vote goes to 'part it out'. It needs way too much work IMO.

Good luck,
E

I used to have an 88GT Vert and I swapped everything over to the 90LX.

My reasons.

The vert needed a new top and paint.
The vert is heavy.
The vert needed a roll cage to go 13.99 and I was already running faster than that.
The vert rattled

The LX was 300 bux with no motor or tranny which is cheaper than a new top.
When I looked at the LX I noticed it still had the A9L ECU in it, I sold the ECU for 150 bux so I actually only paid 150 bux for the LX.
The LX is light, and looks clean and dont need a cage till 11.99.

400 bux is a good deal for all the work he is going to do. To me this is a no brainer. Not to mention the 90LX will run 3-4 tenths faster than the vert.

Unhappy Painful, but...

Dude, Part it out. I'm looking at that picture, and the amount you will probably spend fixing it up, you can find another Fox-Body Vert engineless that's in better shape if you really want one. So rather than purely part it, if you really want the vert, I would shop around for a new body/frame first. Then you can part it out after, either transferring the good stuff to your new toy, or selling off what you dont need.

That's my opinion, not that it means anything...

I'm going to have to agree with Dark on this. His reasons were reasons I was already thinking of before I started to post this message. Like you said the LX WILL be faster. I don't see a problem as far as the LX being a daily driver.

Hell there are many guys out there that have 11 sec cars as their daily driver. You know you want to part the GT and put it in the LX so do it!

Put it all in the LX (for such reasons as others listed) and in the mean time see if you can get a old beater car. Hey wanna buy my '91 lx 4-cylinder? $850.

Wanna buy my '89 LX 2.3L I4 Notchback? Only has 105k miles, tranny was rebuilt about 20k miles ago, everything else is stock, interior is in great condition, could use some very minor touch ups, exterior is in decent shape, some rust and a minor dent in the driver side fender... Passenger side door handle is missing ($20 replacement easily found anywhere), and the gas gauge needs to be re-calibrated. Everything else in the car runs great, AC blows ice cubes, radio, power mirrors, power door locks, everything. $1000

She's just begging for a conversion!

I would definately either part the car out of swap it over and here's why that's what i would do:
Just like any piece of metal, once you bend it it loses ALOT of strength, you can bend it back, but another accident would bend it around even worse. Also, the torque of a V8 in a fox body convertible that has a weakened frame from a wreck....you'll total the car just by hitting the accelerator pedal

I don't believe it's in your best interest to fix the frame and try to get things to line up. the car will squeek and rattle more, the handling will be worse (the car will flex more) and if you ever sold it, buyers might notice it's been wrecked or be turned away by saying it's been wrecked.
