Lightbulb Anyone done this?

I have a friend with a 428 CJ and I have a 1980 Mustang LX body. Has anyone ever put a 428 in a 4 cyl Stang body. What kind of headache would I be looking at? Thanks for your comments.

Lets see here, you will first need a new transmission, drive-shaft, rear end, suspension, the best bet is to find a gt or lx with a blown motor are a rolling chasis..
One guy on here awhile back told me the best way though to do this...
First off, take the gas cap off of the 4cylinder, move it out of the way, pull up a gt or lx 5.0, and screw the gas cap back on.

Thumbs up

I got a C4 tranny sitting around and I can get the Rearend from a junkyard and rebuild it. The aluminum driveshafts aren't too expensive. How about putting all of this stuff together? Say I did have the Gt body (8 cyl.),what would i be looking at then?

I would have to know how much hp you will be wanting. If you plan on a drag car, you will have to stiffen up the frame and replace the shocks and struts, which should be done anyway, with drag shocks and struts. If you are going with a 302 for normal driving, you could just use subframes. You should still put a gear in it and a rebuild kit for posi...I think the T05 can hold up close to 330ft lbs of torque ..So if you are going with more than that you will have to replace the tranny anyway.

This will definitely be a drag car. Whats wrong with using a c4 tranny? An 8 cyl. body wouldn't have good enough suspension for this setup would it? Probably starting out about 400-450 HP.

Thats alot of hp...If you are going with that much, you could choose a 4 cylinder or v8 rolling chasis because you will be replacing just about everything anyway.
You will need 90/10 or 70/30 struts, 50/50 drag shocks, drag springs with airbag, If its drag only, might as well tub it. That will get you great traction. I dont know the specs on the c4. How much tq can it handle?? Are you going to use the 428 or a 302?? You might have to get special motor mounts for the 428, not sure on that though.
You will also need a roll cage. Oh ya, and subframe connectors...

I've heard that the c4 could handle up to 1000 hp but like I said just heard. As far as torque, I have no idea but if it can handle 1000 hp, I would imagine it could handle the torque of a 400-450 HP engine but like I said I'm not positive. Thats why I'm here, hoping someone could tell me. The 428 is a definite. As far as the c4, if it can't handle it, then i can get a c6 for cheap but once again, I'm unsure about these trannys as far as what they can and can't handle.
