Wink Headers

I want to put some headers into my '65 stang, but am not sure of what brand to purchase. Plans for the pony are Edelbrock Alum Heads, a T-5 conversion from a C-4, Comp Cams or Crane Cams Roller Rocker kit...not sure on this one, but am probably going to be looking at a ~400 hp outfit. What I am curious about is what headers would be best.....I've heard Hooker headers tend to fit better than Hedman.....Flowtech and Dynomax I know very little about. If anyone has any advice on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thx

Go with the Hooker and while you're at it go with Super comps. I threw away my hedmans b/c of leaks due to not fitting port shape and finally burning a hole in the side. Any header can be hard to install, jack up engine and work it in, and keep telling yourself not to start beating the sh1t out of your car. To get 400hp out of a 289 you're going to need a good cam and induction on top of the stuff you stated. Also be careful with that much power and a stock t5

I too am a fan of Hooker super comps. It took me a while to finally get a pair when i did it was well worth the money. It is also worth it to get the them coated.

How about Tri-Y headers? Does anyone know if these are any good, as good as Hooker's, or even respectable?

Tri-Y's are a good street engine header. Shelby used them on the street version GT-350's. I use them and like them alot, but I'm running a low end torque 306, making 300 HP at 5100.

If you're serious about wanting 400 HP from a 289, you'll have to do it above 6000 RPM. For that you'll need 4 into 1 headers, probably Hooker Super Comps as mentioned earlier. With an engine that does this, you won't have much low end torque. Make double sure that's what you really want before you build that engine. Drivability will suffer. It will run best flat out. Part throttle won't be too good.

My $.02 anyway.

I prefer the Hookers too. I run them on my 68 FB with 289, AOD.

Do any of you guys know if Hooker Super Comps will fit in a 65 with a 351W? I know shorties from hedman are supposed to work, but I would like long tube headers if I can find a set that will fit. Thanks.

I know Hooker makes headers for that conversion, but I'm not sure of the configuration. Best bet is to check with Hooker.

I would go with the hooker headers. Ive got a comp cam and its very nice but be prepared to get crapping gas mileage.
