Post Anyone here making BIG power with pedestal mt rockers?

Im looking into heads for a 347 stroker and all the major brands use shaft mount rockers. I already have a set of 1.7's and my friend has a set of FMS 1.6's he will probably give me if I need them. Anyway, I REALLY dont want to spend another 450 or so on a shaft setup. Does anyone make decent pedestal mount heads? They will have to flow really well since Im putting them on a stroker. Any info would really be appreciated.

Something you might want to watch out for on that stroker is the temp problem. I ran a electric fan with 2-core radiator and the temp ran HOT. Changed back to the stock clutch fan and 2-core and still hot. Switched to a three core and Perma-cool fan and still ran a bit hot. So i opened up the old thermastat and now she runs 160-190. Unless at a idle cause of the thin water jackets it warms up to bout 220.

"Anyway, I REALLY dont want to spend another 450 or so on a shaft setup."

Do you mean STUD mount rockers most heads are made for both. You can get a set of 1.6 Crane Blazers for $200 and they are nice quality pieces, the stud mounted rockers are better for higher HP cars. Stay away from the 1.7's they add a lot of stress to the drivetrain and can cause problems with big cams, stay with the 1.6.
A Shaft mount system is nice but it will cost you $450, you could buy the stud mount 1.6's for $200 and add a set of $125 girdles if you are worried about deflection.

Smokedawg what exactly do you mean by opened up the thermostat? If you add a 160 thermos it is actually to low as it doesn't give the radiator enough time to cool the hot water down because it is open so much. I was running a Ron Davis Racing with a Stewart pump and a 195 thermo and a Flex fan and only run 180 in the dead of summer. I just switched to a 16" Perma Cool.

I also noticed you said you want RR but you are going to have to wait? You aren't running roller rockers, the stock stamped steel rockers are rollers?

I cut the center out of the thermastat is what i meant to say. Fuel injected cars systems are made to run best at 170 to 190 degrees. Not like the older cars. My uncles run stock cars at kitly in indy. They cut there thermostat out too so it keeps there motor cooler. It works!

Yes I meant stud mount. I spent $180 on these crane 1.7's and I can get a set of fms 1.6's for free. I realy dont want to have to buy new roller rockers. Im already spending too much damn money on this thing! thanks for the info.

Smokedawg- The stock EEC needs to read 180 degress or it goes into a start-up mose nad adds fuel and retards timing.

Fastang- Sell the 1.7 it shouldn't be hard and get the 1.6's go stuf mount, it will be worth it in the future. IMHO

I'm running pedastal roller rockers (1.6's) with my stock ported/shaved heads and my car went a best of 13.730 with the stock gears and terrible traction. With my new 3.73 gears I am willing to bet I could get into the low 13's with good traction. I'm shooting for mid to low 12's with just the motor and I'll be there when I get my heads and a couple other little things. But by then I'll be using stud mount rockers.

Edelbrock, Ford GT-40Y, Ford GT-40X, and AFR's all can be ordered pedastal style. One of those ought to be good for you.

I'm yet to hear of a pedestal mounted roller rocker causing problems. Unless you're building a race car I'd just keep using the pedestal rockers. Holley heads also have pedestal mount rockers available. Just watch what you use for cam lift.
