I always use the single-piece rubber gasket available from Ford. I also put a dab of silicone at each corner when putting it on and will run a continuous bead of clear silicone around the entire pan-to-block joint after the pan is installed. I've never had leaks. I guess I go to this extent because I hate the thought of leaks....seems to work.
