AOD rebuild or replace? HELP!
My father in-law is going to buy a 92 Mustang in need of a new transmission. It has AOD in it right now. Which is better, rebuild it or replace it? If replacement is the recommendation could someone recommend a brand and possibly the cheapest place to buy. Summit has a TCI AOD for $1149.00. If rebuilding is the best option how much does it usually costs with parts and labor? I live in the DFW metro area so if someone has a shop recommendation I would appreciate it. He is not wanting a high performance tranny.

I would replace it with a built AOD. I paid about $1,800 for my rebuild plus warranty if I know now what I knew then I would have bought a Lentech Built AOD, which has a very good reputation! it will cost about the same as a rebuild and will be MUCH stronger.
My tranny went twice after I had it rebuilt cause of poor craftsmanship of the shop I went to, stay away from Aamco!!! I would suggest a good built AOD. I'm sure others here will post about Lentech and can tell you more about them. |
i should be getting my mustang back soon i got a rebuild ... but i did get a trango shift kit and a 2500 stall and a level 10 over haul kit .. ill tell you how it feels ..
but if you have the money lentech would be the way to go. |
What is the purpose of buying this car? You tell me that and I'll tell you what I think he should do. I've been through the rebuild and the performance rebuild and considered all options..

This will be a daily driver. No racing with some bolt on power boosters eventually.

I guess I'd have to say.. spend the $800-900 and get a rebuild if there is no real power to follow.. Or you could spend $200-300 more and have a t-5 installed, manuals are fun to drive..
If I was to do it again, I would get a C4. It would be the same price or maybe even cheaper. You would lose od but.. I don't use od in the city anyhow(I wouldn't really miss it much). It may throw the speedo off though, something you might want to check into if you decide to go with a c4. |
