Aod shifting ??????

Is it a bad Idea to shift a 91 gt Aod from first to second and hold second to 5500rpm??? I have a problem I just bought my car It has alot of mods about 330 hp or so 3.73s and a shift kit my problem is if it is just in Drive it only raps out 2nd gear out to 4500rpm and all my power is around 5200rpm. Now ? 2 when I shift from 1st to 2nd by myself I do it at about 5500 and it will sometimes hit 2nd for like a second and go right into 3rd I have droped it back down into 1 and it will go back into 2nd and I can hold it intul 5500 but I dont want to damage any thing. the tranny only has 45000 on it. And it feels solid and shifts hard you can tell it has a shift kit in it. One more ? does any one know why it is short shifting 2nd?????

Looks like you need to do the AOD "shuffle". Put it in first, when you get to you shift point move the shifter into D. Wait a few seconds(to let the OD band disengage, you don't wann burn up OD) then move the shifter back down into second. Hold it till your shift point, then move the shifter back into D to engage 3rd.

Doing the aod shuffle won't hurt the tranny to bad will it ??? THe guy I bought this car from did alot of work to it mods wise I wonder if he beefed up the tranny??????

the AOD shuffle won't hurt your trans IF you wait a few seconds before you put in back in 1. The reason is because the AOD engages OD for a second during the 1-2 shift. If you don't wait a few seconds(3-4) before pulling it back down into 1 you will eventully burn out the OD band in you trans.

Well, you're experiencing the same thing that so many other AOD owners have before you.

I have the same problem in that, on occasion, when I shift from 1st to 2nd and don't pull the shifter back into 1, the tranny seems to pretty much skip 2nd alltogether and go straight to third. This can be avoided by doing as tireburner suggested; however, in my experience, if you wait any significant length of time, the tranny wants to shift into third early.

You're going to just have to play with the shuffle and figure out what works best for your tranny.

The best solution, of course, would be to buy a Lentech valve body. I'm getting one in April for my AOD. The Lentech unit allows instantaneous manual shifting for the AOD in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Overdrive is locked out electronically until you want to use it (cruising on the highway). At that time, you flip a switch, and whoala....overdrive.

Why exactly does the o/d band come in during the 1 to 2 shift. I've heard this a lot but never really understood.

Does the tranny shift at 4500 when at full throttle or part throttle?? At full throttle it should shift closer to 5000 rpms. if it doesn't you might want to try adjusting the kickdown linkage. to get a different shift point, as mentioned before an aftermarket valve body with an electronic OD might be a good idea.

Lentech??

Where can I find a lentech and how much are they, also are they easy to install? as for the shifting it shifts at 4500 under full this lentech sounds like what I need!!!!!

do NOT try to adjust the kickdown cable, because it isnt actually a kickdown cable, its the throttle valve cable (TV) and if it is out of factory adjustment then your tranny will be toast soon after

You really need to find out what you have before you start pouring money into it. If this guy you bought it from really knew what he was doing by heavily modding an AOD car then it should have a pretty strong AOD in it as it sits.

As for the lentech, if your tranny is stock then you'll probably want to get the whole lentech tranny for like $1200-1400, somewhere around there.
I think the valve bodies are like $350-400 alone, then you'll want to put a good converter in there too, $500-700 depending on which one you go with.

What are the other mods to the car? It's not cheap getting 330hp out of a 302, is this an actual dyno numer or just what the guy told you just to sell the car?

there transmissions start at $1995 but you can just buy the valve body for $300-400 then you can manual shift 1,2,3 and electric switch for o.d
