Question AOD Shifting problems?

Hi all..I have an 89 5.0 with an AOD that has a shift kit installed, and 4.10 rear. My problem is, at part throttle, the trans will go from 1-3 before I make it to 25MPH. If Im into the throttle, it holds, with nice crisp shifts.
After searching the board, I looked at my TV cable, and it seems to be at the end of it's adjustment (ie; maxed out)...I haven't been able to find any kind of diagnostic info (Chiltons a joke, and crawling the web proved fruitless), so I'm hoping someone here can help.

(I'm not used to cables and what-not...I'm a convert from a 72 Chevelle...)

I am soooooooooooooo tempted to gut it all out and go with a 351/C4 combo...no computers, no funky cables, just a simple Holley 4bbl.

yeah but even then you still have the mechanical linkage for throttle and kickdown, etc.

I'm not sure of the web address but Transgo has a info section on their site on how to properly adj. cable. Mine does the same thing and I've only got 373. But that will change soon. Got a deal from HP performance on a built AOD w/ manual VB, one peice input ect.. I saw the car run that it used to be in, it worked sweet in it. Can't to get it in

u said it felt like it was out of adjustment......does the cable still move with the throttle as you move the linkage? Not sure how long you have had this problem...but try not to drive it if you think the cable is not in adjustment, this will kill that trans in no time.

It still moves, but the block (I dont know the terminology...the part that mounts to the throttle lever) is at the end of the adjustment. I've only gone 10 miles or so (just to get it home). Do you think the shift points are out of whack due to the 4.10 gears?

Maybe I should just start a search for a C4 locally...Any tips on what I'm looking for? IE; Certain years, models, etc?

ok, what changed on ur setup that made the car do this? Did u adjust something and then the problem happended? How many miles on the tranny?
The 4.10 gears should not effect the cars shifting, since you have the older model AOD (pre 93 I think). Mine is a 1991 AOD out of a gt, and shift's great in my car. I put an aftermarket TV cable kit on mine, which I believe is similar to the stock setup on the GT cars in the late to early 90's.

Your car skipping 2nd and going straight to 3rd seems odd, not sure right now how the cable would cause that, but I really need more details to help give advice on this.

I would not put a c-4 in there, probably just a waste of money right now. On the other hand, if you are just wanting to make this a strip warrior, then go for the c-4. If you plan on driving it on the hihway at all....plenty of people in here have gotten the AOD to perform well for them.

I bought it about a month ago...it's been like this since then (Pretty much the only problem w/the car...and for the price, I couldnt pass it up). While It's not going to be a "Strip-Only" car, most other driving will be around town (No highway).

It does hit 2nd, but it only stays there for a minute, then onto third

ok i'm going to try to explain how to adjust the tv pressure on this transmission here is a picture of the plug you will need to remove the pink one is the tv adjustment plug

you will need to put a transmission pressure guage in that hole

you will need a guage block that is .215 thick and slotted to fit over cable type cars (fuel injection)

on carb models you will install the guage block to hold the lever out that distance on cable models it's the same thing just slide it over the end of the cable holding the cable out that distance

pressure should be 33-35lbs idling warm in neutral with a idle less than 850

a 750 idle would work best at the 33lb setting a 850 idle at the 35 lb setting

if you have a 1000 rpm idle you will need to set it to about 38psi

and a 650 idle(good luck getting that) would need to set about 31-32

Default Re: AOD Shifting problems?

I'm actually having a similar problem... After shifting out of first, it goes to second, and then third, but seems to stay in second, even if at a stop... And the kick down doesn't seem to be working... OD seems to not engage... I put a new B&M transmission, with a 2400 stall converter in it, I haven't drove it that much, but I think I'm going to take it to a transmission shop to see what they can do... I found that web site mentioned earlier, and adjusted it per what they said, still didn't help...
I hope I can get it fixed before I have to go back to work lol...
Thanks, Ryan

I used the instructions from a Haynes manuel to adjust mine. Works great. I actually set the cable 1/16 shorter than it should, trans shifts hard in every gear, stays in each gear longer. My car is bone stock except for cat back Flowmasters and itll bark sec. gear hard, with 2.73s out back. Before I adjusted the cable it shifted soft and was in 3rd or OD before you new it. If you got on t in 1st gear and let off a little it would skip sec. some times. Ive been driving my car over a year like this and have not had any more problems with it.

I think it's more complicated than that, I'm going to take it to a transmission shop tomorrow, I hope it's that easy...
