AOD Trany shifter is stiff
I have a 89 Coup with an AOD. As it has gotten colder the shifter has gotten harder to place in gear. It will go in and drive ok but is stiffer than when it is warm. Can anyone explain why this is happening?

Hi Martan!
Somebody is bound to know the answer to this. I would guess that the bands are worn and constricting in the cold weather. However, I am no tranny expert and hope someone here will help you out. Got my hood finished today. Yipee!:D

because your car is 13 years old and the shifter mechanism probably has never been cleaned, oiled, or maintained in any way.
take the console off and look around. see if you can find the problem. also look underneath the car at the cable and the linkage on the tranny. disconnect the cable from the tranny and move the tranny lever by hand to isolate the problem to the tranny or the shifter. let us know what you find.. |
i bet your shifter cable has somehow found its way to close to the exhaust system and melted. give it a good look over. also like mach 1 said check the shifter area out, maybe someone spilt soda down there and made the shifter all stickey and gumed up.
