Exclamation Auto Meter Guage Install Question

PLEASE HELP!!!

I am working on installing some auto meter guages particularly the water temp guage on my 90 gt. After removing the stock temp sensor I found that the auto meter sensor tip it to long to fit in the metal tube that the factory sensor came out of. Does the auto meter tip have to be fully submerged in the coolant or can it just touch? I was thinking that I could use a brass fitting extender or something to give me room for the auto meters tip? Think this could work? Would I still get a accurate reading? Does any one have a better idea?

Thanks for your help.
