Post Advice on Axle swap

I have a 73 Grande with a 2.75 rear-end which I want to change to a 3.25. Can I do this by just switching the gears or is it best to swap the whole unit? I'd prefer to keep my housing as I know the condition of the brakes, bearings, seals, etc. Any advice - any Mustang Monthly articles on this? Thanks, Steve.

If the 2.75 gears are good, just get another pumpkin and swap it out. Then you can always put the 2.75 back in (pretty easy once you have done it a few times) if you take a long trip. If you are looking for performance I would recommend a 3.55 Traction-Lok. You can get them freshly rebuilt from Currie

not cheap, but problem free.

Is your rear a 9" or an 8"? Either one will accept a different carrier as suggested. Your housing does not need to come out by any means. The luxury of having a Ford (hotchkiss desined) rear is the drop out carrier. You can have another carrier set up with whatever gears you want for strip style action, and still be able to cruise the streets with another carrier set up for cruising. All you need to swap is some gear oil, a couple jackstands, a jack and a few tools to swap the rear out. A tube of silicone will help as well to seal it up again.
