B-cam question
O.k. guys. I've had a b-cam sitting in my garage for about a month. I've been trying to decide if I should install it or not. I am considering going with a custom grind, but I have to save up some money for it. I am looking for a cam to work with the mods in my sig that will NOT sound aggressive or lopey, but will give me a decent increase over the stock cam. Am I wishing on a star. I know some of you all with say to slap her in there until I get the custom grind, but she is my ride and I don't want to have to rip her apart time and time again. I would rather just do the job right the first time. Is a custom grind the answer, or is there an off the shelf cam that might fit my application?
I'm thinking that I might just sell the b-cam and use that towards a custom grind.

The B-cam will give you little to no improvement over the stock cam when you are running stock heads.
You have the stock cam with 1.7 RR right now and that is the best set-up for stock heads. IMO,

Once you bolt on the heads, you would pick-up HP/TQ from a 'better' cam. However, most 'better' cams will have more of a lopey idle than the stocker. That's just how it is. I had a mild Steeda cam (#19) and even that sucker had a much more agressive tone than the stock cam.
With all that said, where do you want the car to be in the end? Drag car, mild street car, weekend cruiser? E

I'm actually leaning towards mild street car. I have to drive 25 miles to work every day, and like I said before, she is my ride. I don't plan to take her to the track on a weekly basis. I might take her once or twice after i get everything on, just so that I have an idea what she can do. I know that practice, practice, and practice will improve my times, but I am really just looking for a ballpark figure.
I really need a car that is sounds mild, and won't get burned by many of the stockers that are coming out nowadays.

Well, since you have the cam anyways, you might as well try it. If you end up not liking it, it's not a huge job to change out in the future.

I did notice that after I changed the stock air box for the BBK CAI, there was a roaring rush of air being sucked into the engine. I also noticed a kick in the low end. All things being equal, is the custom grind my best bet in getting what I want?

YES
I'd think so. That way you can talk to the cam builder and explain exactly what you want out of your cam, in relation to what mods your motor currently has...or may be getting in the future.

You have basically the same parts i do, i have the explorer intake, and gt-40 heads, i also have some porting on the heads, and mild porting on the lower intake, i see high 12's consistantly.
I went with the e-cam for the drivability though, the b-cam is a little more aggressive, and will belch you out some more exhaust fumes Btw, upgrade those springs if you put those heads on, trust me.

I have GT40 heads i was going to install on my car with a B303 cam and 1.7 roller rockers and after consulting two different custom cam grinders they both recommended getting the B303...Which must mean something since they willingly gave up business.
A B303 cam with 1.7's is pretty much the max in terms of lift without stud mounted rocker arms/stud conversion and with the GT40 heads should give you a ton more power, although if you want a tame street car the stock cam with 1.7's really isn't all that bad.
