back firing problem!

my 87 sounds like its backfiring when i sometimes stomp on it all of a sudden. it feels like a loss of power for that second. ive changed wires and plugs. my car runs good just until i stomp on it in low end range. what can it be? sometimes im thinking its coming from the engine ? inside the oil pan or somewhere. any suggestions???

Check your timing and post the results.

Could you explain this in a little more detail?

Okay, I'll go out on a limb here and say you have a loose collector bolt. This will cause a slight exhaust leak, but when you back off the throttle suddenly, after punching it, it will create a small "backfire" because the sudden vacuum draws oxygen rich air into the red hot exhaust, and causes it to ignite. Very common problem when a header collector bolt is loose, or the gasket is damaged.
