I Really need cam help
I would like to build a BAD @SS N/A 351windsor & want ideas. It will be a

A Combo i like is:
351w Stock Short block
stock 5.0 fuel lines
trick flow twisted wedge heads
trick flow "351" intake
24lb injectors
pro-m 77mm mass air
trick flow 1.6 Rocker arms
crane hi-6 ignition & ps-91 coil
190lph pump & AFPR
Stock 5.0 t-5 (when she blows, probably a Termec TKO)
bbk 70mm t-body & egr
3.55 or 3.73 gears
drop engine mounts (So It Fits under the stock hood. I Love Sleepers!)
new flywheel
new distributor
new (or used) oil pan
I DONT KNOW WHAT CAM WOULD SUIT THIS COMBO!!!
I dont want to cut the pistons.

I would apprecieate it if you could help me on a cam.

Well I am not sure what cam you should use. I don know that it is a lot harder to be able to build a 351 compared to a 302. My suggestion would be a 347 stroker. There are several things I just don't like about 351's. I am planning on the stroker update soon.

------------------
89 LX Coupe
306, 10:1 compression, Holley Heads, Intake, and Cam package, 70 mm Throttle body and Mass Air,
30 lb injectors, 255 lph fuel pump, 1 5/8" full length headers, Flowmaster 2 1/2" American Thunder Cat back system,
Centerforce dual friction clutch, 4.10 gears
50-175 hp Nitrous Works kit, 5" Auto Meter Shift Light

Crane has a good selection of retrofit roller cams (if you don't have a 94 or newer roller block) check www.cranecams.com they're good with Ford cams, too. Look at their descriptions - that will tell you operating characteristics. I'm sure you can also contact them & ask. You might have a problem with the pistons, though. At the VERY least, ALWAYS mock it up and check w/clay. I would suspect you're not going to do much for cam w/o doing something w/pistons. If you want a "ba" engine, definitely go the R heads. 20 more hp & torque than street heads even w/relatively mild cam. Also, they match the port flow of the intake better - the intake flows 310, the street heads something like 260 or so and the R's somewhere at or close to 300.

Look at their descriptions - that will tell you operating characteristics. I'm sure you can also contact them & ask, specially about the pistons. You might have a problem with the pistons. Also, they match the port flow of the intake better - the intake flows 310, the street heads something like 260 or so and the R's somewhere at or close to 300. AFter all this - I've got an article that tested both street & R heads on a street 351 w/Crane retro roller 220 @ 050 & only 498. Used modified 400 rods for better rod/stroke ratio, & Yates style JE pistons that had valve reliefs that matched the comb chamber shape for good quench & efficient combustion. Ran Performer efi w/custom WOT chip - trifk flow intake not yet available. All parts listed in article. Said could have used bigger cam w/R heads to do best output. Ran 11-1cr, ran best at only 32 advance (efficient combustion) on 87 octane (no misprint) and with the R's put out 450 torque at 4000 & 400 hp at 5000. That could probably go up 15 or more w/bigger cam. I've got article scanned if you'd like. I'm going to build one. macx@clas.net if you want, mention what you're after. 2 transmissions so I don't overload your mailbox.

What is it you don't like about 351's?? The are more powerful than a 302/306/347 and put out more torque. Plus, the main caps are much stronger. Go WITH THE 351!! The only downside is weight.

82 GT 03-06-2001 11:14 PM

I agree with stroker 393 about the 351.My '82 Gt used to have a balanced and blueprinted 302 with early 302 heads machined to accept 202/160 chevy valves, port work, screw in studs, Compcam with 292 duration and .535 lift, shorty headers and flowmaster exhaust system,Holly 650 carb and forged 10:1 pistons. I spent about $3000 total. After I installed a mild 351W I saw a night and day difference in power with the 351. Remember, torque is what actually moves the car down the track...not HP which is a byproduct of torque.
Enough of the science lesson for now...bottom line is I will never put a 302 back into that car. When it is time for another engine in my '88 GT it will also get a 351.
Just my 2 cents
