bad synchros??

I notice a slight grind between 1-2 in my 88GT. It only does it while upshifting but not downshifting. Is this a sign of the syncs going bad? I though maybe my clutch cable was a little stretched or something but the grinding would happen in every gear then..huh?
Second gear is the only gear that does this. If I shift a low rpms then it doesn't do it.
Any clue what this might be. Please tell me I don't need new synchros...PLEASE!!!

That's the way mine was before my rebuild. Bad synchros.

I have EXACT same problem. Man I think it is my sychros now, but I'll know for sure after I adjust the cable. Dang. How do you rebuild one of these T-5's? http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif

Is it possible that I might get away with just a cable adjustment? Would an out of adjustment cable only cause second gear to grind instead of all of them. That would be cool if this is the case with me!!!

I Very seriously doubt it's your cable. Syncro's on T5's always go out, and it sounds so in your case.

How much are synchros and how much would it cost to get it rebuilt? I know I couldn't do it myself.

1BAD89 06-12-2001 10:34 PM

If you have the money buy a new super duty T5 from jegs or summit. $1099 is how much mine cost. The ford plac was going to charge 1500 parts and labor just to fixmy 2nd gear syncro.

It will ba around $700-$1000 any where respectable. I was hoping it was something else too, changed the tranny fluid and all but just delayed the inevitable.

If it's a slight grind on only one shift, an upshift from 2-1 for that matter, which is never smooth, then why automatically scream rebuild? From now on just go really slow when you do the 2-1 upshift. I didn't think first had any synchros anyways, or 5th. Mine grinds a bit from 2-3 but I'm not thinking rebuild until another 50k or I rip the gear completely out. Baby it, dont miss gears, and you'll be fine.

I'd say its synchros for sure. They are not expensive, but you may need a new speed gear if its worn out. If you do a rebuild, its better to replace everything that looks a little worn out. The rebuild process is not very complicated for a T-5. I got mine done for cash for $250 total! (thats Canadian dollars). I needed synchros and a new gear.

I think I saw a super-duty rebuild kit for $192 includes everything.

You could baby it all around, but don't you want to drive it hard. I mean **** you could drive on a fucked up blown engine and blown tranny, but do you want to?

TEXSN95 06-15-2001 05:36 AM

Um there is a huge difference between driving with a 2-1 upshift grind compared to a blown engine and tranny. So someone tell me if first has a synchro or not.
