Ball or Stone Hone
 

So, I had to take my engine apart to get the threads in the snout of my crank repaired and I am putting it back together with new rings. I took the whole engine apart. Which hone should I use to freshen up the cylinder walls. I can still see the crosshatch from the last rebuild as I only have about 15 or 16k miles on it. I have been told that the stone hone is a little more abrasive at 220 or 280 grit and that a ball hone would be better suited for refreshening. I found a flex hone at Napa.com but it is stated as 120 grit. I assume the flex hone is the same as the ball hone. If so what is it with the grit rating? To me, the stones are less abrasive as noted by their grit rating. Their is a big price difference between the stones and the flex hone. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

Just get the "dingle ball" hone and clean it up. Knock off the glaze on the cyl. walls.

You can use the stone hone and buy 400 grit stones (at least you can around here) or even cover the stones with 400 grit wet/dry paper.
