Question battery voltage and temp guage ??

If the voltage on the battery drops due to lack of charge while the engine is running, does the temp guage read higher or lower? It's an 86 if that matters. Also I heard that the voltage regulator for the instrument panel on the 86 is a real piece of crap, that it doesn't actually regulate as much as it just cuts out if it overheats. Has anyone put an real voltage regulator in place of it?

When I had charging problems, every time the battery voltage would drop, the temp would go higher, that was on an '88 GT....
