BBK Longtubes suck!

I just bought a cheap pair of BBK longtubes. The quality sucks, welds are ugly , clamp marks everywhere and my biggest hatred, I got the passenger side in and then got the drivers side in and couldnt bolt it on........the f&*%#g collector was pressing on the lickage for the shifter...and would not yield the 1/4 inch needed to get the bolts in.........Has anyone ever used these crappy headers........if so was this a problem with yours, and this common with all longtubes?

Dark_5.0 01-31-2004 11:42 AM

I guess the BBK long tubes do suck cause you are the third person that has said it this month.:o

jonnyk 01-31-2004 12:02 PM

It could be worse...you could have bought MAC's :D

tireburner163 01-31-2004 12:12 PM

The problem is your transmission.

I bought my BBK long tubes (and yes, they DO suck) off my older brother because they wouldn't clear the bell-houseing on his AOD.

Sorry dude, I think your gonna need new headers.

so what are some good longtubes that will fit? That are relatively cheap?

QuantumMotorsports 01-31-2004 04:15 PM

MAC longtube headers are the best headers I've ever seen. Quality and fit was excellent.

Dark_5.0 01-31-2004 04:28 PM

I bought some Mac long tube headers for my 01' cobra and they didnt fit well at all.

I ended up selling them on ebay.

I second that assuming they have AOD-fitted headers.

I've used BBK's and MAC's longtubes. I liked the BBK's better for ease of installation, but the MAC's (once in) left me more clearance around everything.

If you want to save cash, get the MAC's but get them Jet-hot coated or something, their HTS coating peels off after a few weeks-months.

Id also put a vote in for the hooker super comps but those arent going to be as cheap as the others.

What's wrong with BBK's? Do they fit OK with a 5 spd. trans? Are there any other brand headers (longtubes) that are better for close to BBK's price? I was gonna buy a set of their ceramic coated longtubes for my 90 coupe, but now I'm not sure. I definitely don't want MAC's, and the Super Comps are a little too high priced.

jonnyk 02-02-2004 09:43 PM

I have no complaints with my BBK's...
Those who whine about the install haven't had longtubes before. They all suck.
Those who whine about the fit seem to be whining for no reason to me....mine fit fine.
I don't see that clearance is a huge issue so long as it touches nothing.

So I guess, BBK's still get my vote for cheap headers.

stang_racer20 02-03-2004 12:10 AM

what most people dont realize is that no one header measures exactly the same as the next. Nothings perfect. Just like my bbk equals are a "bolt-on", yet realistically you have to lift the motor to passenger side in. also had to get the head flanges machines cause they were warped. they work now, but im definitely going with either bassani long tubes or jba's next!

tireburner163 02-03-2004 12:34 AM

My BBK's fit like ***. One header tube touches the starter. Heat soak anyone?

The driver's side was the real problem. I had to shim my motor up 1/2" using washers just to clear my rag-joint so I could turn the wheel. One tube still rubs my steering shaft.

I will NEVER buy BBK again.

This thread is interesting.

I helped a buddy install a set of BBK long tubes on an 88GT 5-sp and it went just fine. No rubbing, no shimming, nothing.

This is weird.

How much can you get a set of JBA's or Basani's in ceramic coated for?

byrnech 02-03-2004 02:45 PM

BBK

I have the BBK longtubes and everything fits fine, now that I have a k-member they are super easy to install. I helped a friend install a set of MAC LT's for an AOD talk about a PITA! The only complaint I have is that the chrome finish on the BBK's is poor quality and the collectors need to be opened up a little but that's it. -Chris

Well the bassani's and the jba's should both available in stainless steel, so ceramic coating is not a biggie. but they do offer ceramic coating over mild steel as well. the prices just depend where you get em.
