Post Best all around tires for your Mustangs are........

A friend of mine who is a member of ThirdGen.org, pointed me to a topic they discussed about the best all around tire. Basically, seems like the Firehawk SZ50 EP and Potenza RE730 came out on the top of their list. Personally, I'd rather have two different sets of tires: one for the track and one for the road b/c an all around tire would seem to give you the worst of both worlds. For example, drag tire: sucks in rain and street tire sucks at the track, thus, "best all around tire" sucks in the rain (and/or on the street) and at the track.

Now, over here at this board, posts on best tires usually get responses like Nittos, Mickey Thompsens, & BFGs.

Anyway, what I need to know from all of you is

Which is the best all around tire, from experience?

Plain and simple. Thanks

Front - Cheapest skinnies I can find for the front.

Back - It doesn't matter because whatever they are, they aren't going to last.

I have BFG Goodrich Radial T/A 235-60R15's on Drag lites. Just the regular Radial T/A's and they are an excellent all around tire. Plus I run consistent 1.92-1.95 60 ft's. IMO the best tire I've ever bought, they cost me about $70/ea. Don't even think about the rain-never worried.

I guess I agree with you-You have tires that you race with and tires that you drive on. If your worried about driving with your street tires(i.e. drag radials) Why not just bolt some slicks on-still gonna worry but at least you'll hook hard. 1.9's on $70 Tires are pretty good for the street.

I like the Firehawk SS and Pirelli's. They seem to be good for cornering and wet weather. I think it is all a matter of personal preference if you ask me. It's hard to find a steet tire with good track qualities because that's just what they are...street tires. Track tires are another catergory.
It's not fair to expect a street tire to do well at a drag strip or expect a drag tire to do well on the street.
It would be more fair to ask which is the better street tire and which is the better drag tire.

I run the Nittos. I have a set of the 333 Extremes as a street tire and I just bought a pair of the 555 Extreme Drag Radials I'll be running out back. 245/50/16's all around and I'm very happy with them. Haven't run the D/R's yet, still to cold to take the pony out of storage, but the 333's were great on wet pavement and they were ok at the track. I never got a 1.9 short time but I was right around 2 flat.

for an all around tire, the best ones I have had (and currently using) are Yokohama AVS sports. They hold up well at the track and are great on the street. They are even good in rain. The drawback is they are really soft so they should only last about 10,000 miles though

What surprised me is that I hardly ever saw BFGs or Nittos come up in their rankings and everytime there is a tire topic over here @ MW, Nittos and BFGs are always the most acclaimed. What, just b/c they run GM machines, they use totally different tires??? I was just kinda confused. Anytime there is a discussion about tires, I usually pay attention.

Any other preferences?

The first set of tires on my Z28 were Firehawk FTXs and they were far better than the PepBoys Futura GTXs I have on now. These tires are terrible on wet roads. The more popular tires on the Camaro sites lean toward the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 and Bridgestone Potenza RE730. Anyone here use these tires? Not too much talk about BFGs or Nittos on the Camaro sites...I wonder why?

I've had Firestone Firehawk SZ50's on my '90 LX for over two years now and I'm very pleased with the performance.
Great on the street and in the rain. too.
I don't run at the track - what racing I manage to do is all on the street - so I have no opinion on that aspect, but overall, the SZ50's are an excellent - if pricey - tire.
Recommended for Mustangers who see little to no track time but want a grippy, safe tire and are willing to pay for it.

Whenever i get tires i get BFgoodrich, i've never had ANY problems with them and the Euro T/A's (245/50-15) i have on the back of mine are wearing really well and hook up pretty decent on the street. I worked at Firestone and all i can say is those are some seriously out of round tires (the new SS20's look good but most have a hop). The SZ50's though are a great tire without many flaws. I've had BFG euro T/A's, Radial T/A's, and Comp T/A (and HR4) and all had great wet weather handling and very little noise and they wore very well. Basically any tire with a Z speed rating is well worth the money in terms of handling and grip and most H rated tires are affordable with great performance.

I like the Winston signatue tire the best . Its given a great hi-way ride on long trips (California to Texas) during the summer. Very smooth an that aint easy in a '65 . Also they dont need to "round out" for day to day short trips. very good wet weathep performance too.
