![]() Gotta change the oil very soon... What's everyone's opinion of the best, non-synthetic oil? And how about the filter? Don't even tell me FRAM....no way right off the bat.

![]() As long as you change both regularly, it really doesn't matter. That being said, I use Mobil 1 oil and either WIX or Purolator filters. ![]() Take care, ~Chris

![]() I use Valvoline full synthetic and wix racing filters for the stang, and the same oil with standard wix filter for the f-150.

![]() I'd use synthetic..but the motor hasn't been rebuilt and it's got 147,000 on it..so..what's the point?

![]() I think for a non-synthetic a Valvoline or Castrol GTX will do you well.
For a filter, use the Motorcraft ![]()

![]() Also what kind of oil should I run? It's got a very minor leak so I don't want to go thin.. 10W30 or 10W40?

![]() I run Mobil 1 non-synthetic in my stock motor with a Motorcraft filter. In the summer I run 10w-40 and in the winter I run 5w-30. My car hardly leaked in the summer, now I can't leave it alone for 30 seconds without oil dripping out of it. I'd definately go with 10w-40 for your application. ~Brian

![]() I use Quaker State in everything. That's what the 302 in my Torino has used since it was new. When I put in new lifters and gaskets at about 78,000 miles the bearings still looked like new and you coudn't even feel any sign of a ring ridge in the cylinders. I was really impressed with the lack of any sludge build up in the engine. In that car it's straight 30w. That is also what I have in the 351C for break in, but that will change to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic afterwards. On both I run the Motorcraft filter, but the Cleveland will get the HP version after break in. I ran QS 10w30 in an old s-10 blazer I had with 100,000 miles on it. With 3000 miles on an oil change, the oil still looked like you had just poured it out of the bottle.
Honestly though, I really doubt a specific brand of oil is any better than another. All non-syns start from the same place - in the ground. Why is everyone so Anti-Fram filters? I've run them now and then (when on sale) on non Fords and never had any problems. On my Fords I always run the Motorcraft cause it looks better. Just wondering.

![]() Trust me, hatred of FRAM is a universal thing. I was in a discussion on ThirdGen.org, when I had my Camaro (still do..prepping it for sale)...and everyone hated Fram. Several of them also had personal experiences with FRAMs...one guy's motor blew and he brought it to a shop who tore the engine apart and told him that one reason the engine blew was because the crappy FRAM oil filter clogged and it didn't have the little emergency valve that, in case of clog, it locks open and allows oil to keep flowing through, unfiltered.

![]() So do you guys get your Motorcraft filters from the dealer? Or do autoparts stores like maybe, Napa sell them? What about the WIX filters? Is that something you'd find at a speed shop? Never seen that brand in the regular autoparts.

![]() Wonder if Discount Auto Zone sells those too. I'd rather give me business to Discount. Even if they're farther away, they do better business around here. People are more knowledgeable, more willing to help you out, and parts are cheaper too..sometimes by a lot.

![]() Of all the oil changes i have done over the years with all the different brands out there, only a couple have gave me trouble. Fram, the internals literally fell apart, and one called MileGuard which the valve stuck. Honestly i have been running the Motorcraft in the Stang and the rest of the cars i have been using Wix, Deutch, STP, Quaker State, and many others. Never had an engine failure due to a filtration problem. I use the motorcraft in my Stang cause of the looks.
