Post New Auburn Posi, noise when turning

I just had a new posi unit put in, and it has been a nightmare. The tech at the local tranny shop is a moron and now I have bad grinding noises when turning hard left or right (especially at slow speeds). Now I have to take it back again and I dont trust them. I bet they can stop the grinding but what if my new $500 Auburn pro has been damaged? I dont think they will tell me. What would you do? This all started when I had a bunch of play in the stock posi unit and I was told the posi unit needed to be replaced. The play has been eliminated, but should I have needed a posi unit at 11k mi? I've got about $850 into this so far! Help!

Well the grinding (if they replaced posi) would be from wrong fluid. You can goto parts store and buy a tube of additive for posi's. It has special lubricants that keeps them from grinding and clicking.

Now as for needing a new one a 11k I would seriously doubt it unless you have hammered the car to death.

Don't take this the wrong way but Auburns are junk. Hopefully you haven't damanged yours yet but I will tell you that if it is it can't be rebuilt. Once they go you have to toss them.

Yes good point Mustang92. I forgot about Auburns being mostly cone type units(non-rebuildable)

I know I will and up getting an Eaton unit when I do upgrade my rearend to 31 splin axles.

FWIW...I've heard a few Cobra owners breaking the Eatons as well under hard launches but not nearly as bad as the Auburns. I'm going to a C-locker soon as my 31 spline trac lock gives out.

Ok people, thanks for your input. I inspected the assembly this morning with the tranny guys and it looked OK. Then we just refilled the rear end with oil as well as the additive and problem solved. I guess these #@@## assholes forgot the additive the first time! By the way, I just put on a set of Nitto 555's and tokico 5 ways and my car hooks baby! I am very surprised how much of a difference the tires make, I see a lot of posts from people moaning about how they suck, I dont get it. The car even corners better and doesnt dance around when going over small stutter bumps when cornering. Also, the new posi unit seems to give me a more solid posi launch. Next stop: 100 shot and the track.

Thumbs up

The Auburn Pro posi is a good unit. It sounds like they didn't add the additive. Don't drive the car until you put it in.

Tell that to the five broken units laying at a local speed shop from friends cars.
