TurboCharger vs Supercharging
ok anyone familiar with the differences between these two, im saving up and getting close enough to start picking whats best. Basically i need to know the differences between the two, advantages and disadvantages of both, maintaince of both, cost vs each other, basically everything you know bout em, like how each work, what each would require for you to buy with it to complete the installation, example i hear you need a larger throttle body for turbochargers ect. anyone that has a charger thx for the imput

Okay heres the deal
turbo charging offers great power gains even more than a supercharger because there is no parasitic drag on the motor like you will get with a supercharger any item that you bolt to the engine that requires a belt ot drive will create a great deal of power loss because a turbo runs off expelled exhaust gases there is no drag. now for the points you requested turbo charging will offer you the greatest increase in power because there is no drag on the engine so expect the rated power to be deliverd completely however turbo charging has many draw backs, for one putting one in is definetly no picnic certain things must be done concerning keeping that puppy cool turbo chargers are put through there paces because they are being run by hot exhaust gases ,they are kept lubricated by tapping into the oil pan on your engine this is not a good thing because even small metal shvings from the engine will completely destroy the turbo if they are injested through the oil supply a spindle spinning in excess of 10,000 rpm will destroy itself real quickly, the air charge that your turbo will expell will be extremly hot ant not realy a good dense charge without the use of a intercooler which you will have to buy that does not come with the turbo kit you will also need to buy a turbo timer to keep the oil from coking after you shut the engine off after hard runs, as for the turbo having turbo lag todays modern turbos don`t realy suffer from that because of a increase in technolgy and compressor wheels a rule with turbos is bigger is not always better a turbo to big will suffer from extreme lag and offer no real benefit, now onto the supercharger even though they are a parasitic source of power it`s benefits outway it`s downfalls the supercharger is in my opinion your best bet because less it needed to install and matain them. you will need to still tap into your engine oil to lubricate them for most systems ,although some are belt driven or have ceramic bearing requiring no lubrcation the air charge is going to be much cooler and denser from the supercharger and no intercooler is needed but is very usefull to buy you get power instantly from a super charger and you will not have the extreme heat from it like you would the turbo. most kits come with everything you need to add a blower or turbo to your engine exstensive r&d has been done by the manufacturer to make it relativly safe to use but this is what a good kit should have in it look for one that come with these items superc harger kits 1.Larger fuel pump 2.Larger fuel injectors 3.all piping 4.if your lucky a after cooler 5.better plugs designed for forced induction 6.fuel pressure regulator 7. engine managment software for the greater fuel needs turbo charger includes all the above plus 1.all exhaust piping for mounting the turbo 2. heat shielding when i get mine i will buy a sc kit preferably that is self lubricating has a after cooler and is easy to install. just a note for basic boost say 6-7 psi the stock 4.6 internal will hold up good but more boost requires better pistons 4.6 pistons are cast and kinda weak the rods and crank will hold the boost but the piston will die quickly if your planning more than 7 psi boost rebuild the bottom end preferably have it balanced and blue printed install a cobra crank which fits perfectly and is steel with aftermarket pistons and rods only buy forged for both and you shpuld have no problems. i hope this information helps and good luck

just so you know
If you go with Turbo Driven Concepts, there kits are complete, there is nothing else that would be needed for the install. The Stage 2x is probably the best one, rated at 550rwhp, and goes for around $6200. You should check out there web site www.turbodrivenconcepts.com and see what they have to offer..

One other difference is that so far the turbo setups for Stangs are not smog legal, while alot of the base model (low boost) superchargers are.
Also, you can use boost control on a turbo so that you are not always running a lot of boost if you don't want it.
