Bolts and Nuts Measuring

Anyone know how to properly measure different grade bolts when trying to find replacements? Do you need a micro meter? I'm going through a restoration of my stang and want to get the exact bolts. I know you first need the correct grade but then there are the threads, the pitch and the underside and all that stuff.
Thanks......

There are many grades of bolts but the identification is on the head. For most applications use SAE grade 5 which has three lines on the head. For Metrick 8.8 is a good grade.

The length of a bolt is measure not including the head. For pitch you need a pitch gauge or use a tap and die set and compare.

There is a lot more involved in fasterners than this but if you have a particular application let me know and I can help.

Thanks 8850!.... I recently removed the two bolts that held the gas tank up to the frame of the car. They are really rusted and I would like to get replacements since I am adding a new tank . On the top of the bolt it says 9.8 . I just don't know how to go about measuring these to get the exact replacements or even where to but them.
Thanks again.

That is a metric bolt. Sears Hardware carries metric bolts.

You go to a hardware store and they have little gauges for measuring them. The person at the hardware store should be able to help. A local hardware store like Ace would be best for this type of bolt. I was able to find stainless steel 10.6s for my suspension.
