About 300 miles. But I have had them break in as little as 100 or as much as 500. Whatever you do, do NOT use synthetic oil! One time I used 1 quart of synthetic out the 8 needed and I had to drain it all back out because it wouldn't seat. I had to use the cheapest oil I could find to create enough friction to seat the rings. Use a good non-synthetic, take it on a long steady trip, and watch your mileage. (This requires topping off your tank quite a bit.) Note your mileage every 50 or 100 miles, and you will see it even out.

Are rings a hard thing to do? I've been thinking of doing mine but not sure. I know that i need to though.

not technically difficult.

there are only about 12 bolts holding the engine in place...

just all the other stuff in the way, lifting the motor out, etc are physically demanding...

then trying to get the right parts from dingbats...special order parts come in after waiting a week or two and they are the wrong part...

trying to get forged pistons from a local store is almost impossible. I asked for forged, they sell me hypereutectic...

oh well...
